Harris English Bombs It Long At Colonial

You might have heard us on John Maginnes' show on Sirius XM PGA TOUR Radio recently talking about some upcoming opportunities at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. We know of one man from Moultrie, Georgia who did! Dan Jeter was listening and when he heard about the chance to caddy for a young man whom he witnessed growing up in his hometown - he was "all in."

Dan carried the bag for the delightful 2-time PGA TOUR winner and was assisted by Birdies for the Brave warrior SGT. Joseph Lowery. Lowery, from Austin, Texas was a natural to be with these two great guys, Harris and Dan.

As is often the case, this day epitomized what we had in mind when we started Caddy For A Cure: A golf-loving, generous "caddy" who wanted to see what it is like to partner with one of the world's best players for a day for charity; A wounded warrior who is deserving of our best golf "thank you" for their brave service; and one of the best players in all of golf.  Seeing all three of these components together, well, it works for us.

It is nearly impossible to walk around Colonial Country Club without pondering the epic history of Mr. Hogan everywhere, it seems. To think of Nelson, Snead, Hogan, Nicklaus, Trevino, and all the great players past and present who have graced these fairways - you have to wonder if they would not smile with pride about a day in golf like this.

We want to thank Harris English and his great caddy Brian Smith. A major thank you goes to our caddy and true gentleman from Moultrie, Dan Jeter. And of course, a very special thank you to our brave wounded, SGT. Lowery! Well done men, well done!

Operation Warrior Golf Underway!

When Caddy For A Cure Founder Russ Holden stood on the range at the Valero Texas Open while coaching and caddying for Masters Champion Bernhard Langer, it was an 'aha' moment for him. Tournament organizers had arranged for several wounded warriors to be taken down the range to watch the best golfers in the world like Langer hit balls, and to ultimately get personal introductions with some of them. In this case, these warriors had all lost legs. As they stood fixated on these great golfers, admiring their swing and shot perfection and the professional golf arena, Holden wanted to do more for them.

Since that day over seven years ago, When Caddy For A Cure has been offering experiences where warriors spend an entire day with one of the world's best players, inside the ropes. While this has been a step up from being on the range watching, Holden wanted to 'do more' for them, again. Maintaining the platform of utilizing his professional golf experience, Holden has expanded support for warriors by starting "Operation Warrior Golf," this mission provides wounded warriors and active duty service members serving overseas the opportunity to use state of the art teaching technology for receiving personal, professional swing lessons, compliments of Caddy For A Cure and its sponsors.

Holden explained, "We have been using the V1 teaching platform for years when working with professional players, including with Bernhard. Knowing that golf is an excellent therapeutic vehicle, we have been trying to figure out a way to give our warriors more instruction, but have been faced with massive costs and logistics associated with bringing them in and putting them up. It was just too expensive." He concluded, "This new HD platform allows me to be able to give lessons on the go from wherever I am, and more importantly, from wherever THEY are. It's the perfect tool for enabling us to achieve our goal of benefiting many more warriors than we're currently reaching with this great game of golf."

We got some pretty good news a few weeks ago from one of our wounded warrior
friends and former caddy from our program. We learned that SGT. Bryan Belcher had been awarded "Athlete of the Year" from VET Sports, an organization dedicated to assisting veterans post service with athletics.  While we were not surprised with Bryan's athletic prowess, knowing his history, we were elated to see him smiling with his award.

When we met first met Bryan, we frankly had no clue of the many issues that these brave men and women who were coming back to America after being in theater overseas were facing. We just knew we wanted to help them by using this great game of golf and some TLC. "Love on them for a few days" as my wife likes to put it.  So we set Bryan up to caddy for superstar Sean O'Hair at the RBC Heritage Classic. He had a good time, we enjoyed meeting, and we thought that was the end of the story.

We found out later that Bryan was really battling some demons that are oh so common to someone who has been in the heat of the battle. We had no idea how serious this condition was, nor the real literal life and death circumstances he was under. When we later learned that this was the case, we were overwhelmed and realized the tremendous responsibility we have as a nation to these warriors, and more specifically, that we as Caddy For A Cure have as we undertake our efforts to assist them.

Yes, SGT. Bryan Belcher was "Athlete of the Year" and we congratulate him. More so, we congratulate him on fighting life's battles and becoming victorious over some pretty devastating issues.

Likewise, we "caddy for a cure."
