Phonics made fun!

I LOVE fall! I love the smell, the colors and the feel. I love that it's crisp and fresh outside and cozy and warm inside. I also love Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. It's a time of family togetherness and giving thanks without all the craziness that can tend to come with the Christmas season. PLUS, this year, we're eagerly anticipating the arrival of our very first grandbaby! She's due Nov. 24th and we can't wait to meet her! (Yes, I AM much to young to be a grandma!! lol) We have much to be thankful for.

This season also offers a variety of learning opportunities. Hopefully, you'll find an idea or two to try in this month's newsletter. Also, most families tend to take a break during the week of thanksgiving. If you have a child struggling with their multiplication and/or division facts, this is the perfect time to brush up (and have fun at the same time). Watch for an email to follow with news on our Fun Fall Facts sale

Fun Fall Learning
Fall and the Thanksgiving celebration make it easy to incorporate learning into the season. Below are some ideas to consider.

Younger:
  • Get the little ones involved in meal-making this month. Even preschoolers can shred lettuce for salads and help mix cookie dough. Or give one or two of these fun kid-friendly snacks a try. You could also let them mix up some of this Thanksgiving Trail Mix to express your gratitude for friends and neighbors.

  • Strengthen your faith with these Bible-based crafts and lessons.
  • Here is a free printable Thanksgiving Preschool Pack full of fun activities.
  • Cut out leaf shapes, glue onto a sheet of construction paper to use as a place mat. Have your child write something he is thankful for on each leaf. If you want to make it extra special, try this technique to "marbelize" your leaves. Lovely!
  • I like the idea of this Venn Diagram comparing men and women Pilgrims. You could also compare Pilgrims and Native Americans or even Pilgrims and Modern Day Americans.

Middle:
  • Let your child look over your grocery list, then see what sales they can find in the grocery store ads to match. Have them calculate the percentage of savings over regular prices for the total meal.
  • Create an autumn leaf "batik".
  • Consider surprising a needy family with a Thanksgiving in a box. Determine a budget together, plan out a meal and shop for items. Make a point to pray for the family throughout the month.
  • Gather some leaves and see if you can identify them. Many libraries have identification guides or you can use a website like this.
  • Compassion.com has some neat downloadable lessons that would be a great way to emphasize thankfulness and care for others.
  • Enjoy coloring these quilt patterns while listening to a family read-aloud on a cozy fall evening or afternoon.
  • Try a fun photosynthesis experiment.
  • Make a Thanksgiving lapbook.
  • Research Sarah Josepha Hale and find out what she had to do with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Older:
  • Have your older kids plan out the Thanksgiving menu. Make it fun by having them estimate the cost of the meal ahead of time, then calculate the actual cost and compare totals.
  • Practice following instructions and learn a new skill by having your student attempt a dish or dessert that's a bit of a challenge. You might consider Thanksgiving Delight or Pumpkin Roll Cake.
  • Read President Lincoln's Proclamation of Thanksgiving. Would we be likely to hear this type of proclamation from a president today? Why or why not?
  • Choose a person or family that you can bless this month. Brainstorm a list of daily (or weekly) blessings you can perform for them.
  • Older kids can make some lovely fall decor that you'll want to keep for years to come. You'll find some lovely ideas here

Head over to Scholastic.com to take a virtual Mayflower journey tour of the ship
.

Here are some good resources for a study on the Plymouth colony and the Mayflower. She also has some neat suggestions and links for a study of the Mayflower Compact, for both elementary and upper level learners.

If you'll be studying different countries this year, you'll want to download this fun and creative Cool Country Report   template from Scholastic. Yep, it's free!

Need some flashcards? These are great! At StudyStack you can find them ready-made or create your own. These are geared to older learners and can even be studied on a cell phone, pda or ipod.

Did you know you can recycle plastic bags to create parchment-style sheets? These would be fun for projects where you are simulating an historic document (or treasure map!).

Another great resource for older learners is this interactive periodic table . Just scroll over an element and click to learn more about it.

This is a fun site. Use this food timeline to find out what foods the Vikings ate, how Thomas Jefferson made his ice cream and who invented the potato chip.

Here is a fun site for your child to visit to learn about seasons and weather (among other things).

Don't forget to check out Rhymezone (rhyming dictionary and thesaurus) if you'll be writing any fall poetry.
