COUNSELOR'S
CORNER
Calling All Juniors and Parents!
Counselors offer juniors a personal conference prior to registration each year. Juniors are highly encouraged to sign-up for an appointment time and invite parents/guardians to come. The appointment books are located on a table across from the main counseling office (402). Appointments are available beginning in early December and going through early February. Parents, please remind your junior to sign up for a time!
Counselors are Out and About!
Counselors conducted classroom lessons with all freshman (9th graders) again in November. Students completed an interest/skills survey that matched them with possible career choices.
In December, we will be seeing all juniors (11th graders) for lessons as well. We will make a college planning portfolio on www.CareerCruising.com by discussing post-secondary schools. The students will choose at least three colleges or technical schools that they are interested in and will explore them.
Internet Safety at Home Presentation
The Counseling Department will be hosting an internet safety presentation on
6:30-8:30 pm
Officer A.G. Campbell, an SRO with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Dept. will be presenting. This presentation is designed for parents/guardians and adults only. Please do not bring your children or teens

Dual Enrollment
Information
Dual Enrollment is the process through which high school students take courses from a college, university, or technical college while still enrolled as a high school student and receive course credit for both the high school and college or a certification.
Upcoming juniors and seniors may apply. If interested, the student should first see their counselor to let us know they are interested, discuss eligibility requirements, and begin the process.
If interested in Accel (Academic) Dual Enrollment at UNG's Cumming or Gainesville campus, students and parents should also attend one of their information nights on either 1/27/15 or 1/29/15 at 6pm at UNG's Cumming campus.
If interested in Career-Related Dual Enrollment with Lanier Technical College, students and parents need to make sure to attend their Information/Registration/Financial Aid Night on 4/15/15 at 6pm at Lanier Tech's Forsyth Conference Center.

NFHS Financial Aid Night
Our annual Financial Aid Night was held on November 18 th. Ms. Natasha Powell from the Georgia Student Finance Commission gave a presentation about the HOPE program/scholarship and other scholarship information. Also, Mr. Scott Kessler, a Certified Financial Planner, gave a presentation as well and held a question and answer session. We had a wonderful turnout and so appreciate all of those who came out on a very cold night! If you could not attend and would like to view the power points from the presentation, they are under our Financial Aid/Hope section on our webpage.

UGA Early Admission Statistics Improve!
NFHS had 37 seniors apply for early admission to University of Georgia. Twenty-four of the applicants were admitted!
This is an increase from an admittance rate of 56% last year to 65% for early admission. This is a testimony to the students' diligence and commitment to a challenging, college prep curriculum. Counselors helped students determine if the early admission process was a wise choice. Our teachers, counselors, and administrators continue to guide students and help them reach their education and career goals.
Congratulations to our students and faculty for the continuing success!

Letter from the Principal
I really feel fortunate to be part of such a caring and giving community. I was able to witness an example of what makes this community so special a couple of weeks ago. Numerous individuals and organizations came together to support the benefit dinner for Student Resource Officer Hodgkins. For those of you who don't know, SRO Hodgkins was hit by a car while directing traffic in front of Coal Mountain Elementary. He has not been able to come back to work at school for several weeks. It was so exciting to see the overwhelming amount of help and support everyone offered. To pull this off in such a short period of planning time, many people had to work quickly to bring it together. Our café staff prepared the dinner and stayed after working their 8 hour day and served the dinner. Ms. Amy Leggett, Ms.Cindy Carr and their Jr. Civitan students; Ms. Robin Bryant, Ms. Alice Gilbert, Ms. Kim Coffey, Ms. Jill Selvig and their Raider PALSS; Ms.Kris Hunt, Ms.Sheri Smith and their FCCLA students all spent long hours baking, serving, and helping out in numerous ways. The Explorer Troop (who is led by SRO Hodgkins) came and cleaned up after the event. I was so very proud of our students. Many businesses and people in our community donated items for the dinner and auction. Many parents, staff members, community members, police officers, and firemen attended, bought dinners, and participated in the silent auction. I am proud to say that this community has raised over $8000 to support the Hodgkins family! Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this benefit a success. It's a great day to be a Raider!
Sincerely,
Beth Hebert, PhD

Early Check-out is an UNEXCUSED absence.
Students will not be allowed to check out until the conclusion of each exam period.
Early dismissal cannot be authorized by telephone. No student will be released from school without a note signed by a parent or guardian. The written or emailed release notes should be submitted to the attendance office in the morning, allowing ample time for school personnel to verify the note prior to releasing the student. If you anticipate your student will be checking out on the early release days (December 17, 18, 19), you may send your written authorization to the attendance office in advance. |
Plan Ahead For Your DDS and ADAP Forms
If you are planning to take your student to get their Driver's License or Learner's Permit over the winter break, please make sure your have submitted the request for the DDS and/or ADAP no later than December 15th. The normal request is to allow a minimum of 48 hours for processing of the forms. The form is valid for 30 days from the date of signature.

North Forsyth's girls basketball career scoring record has stood at 1,333 since 1998. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 that record was surpassed by Caroline Bowns.
Back in 1998, Kevia Elkins Brown set that mark with 1,333 points in a career that spanned the first four years of the school's existence. Tuesday night, Caroline Bowns moved past Brown with a 3-pointer late in the first quarter of a 39-32 win at Lambert and finished the night with 1,343 points and counting. Caroline is a senior at NFHS and recently signed a Letter of Intent to play at Campbell University in North Carolina. By the time Bowns is done at NFHS, her final tally may stand for two more decades.

DECA NEWS
North Forsyth High School's DECA has had a very active fall. In October, our officers and leaders attended our Fall Leadership Conference in Atlanta. Students participated in a variety of leadership workshops to help maintain and grow our chapter.
While in Atlanta, we submitted over 150 books for our fall community service project to help improve literacy for kids. All donated books will be received by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We will continue to collect books through February 2015.
Also in October, over 30 DECA & FBLA students attended an experience at the campus of UNG - Dahlonega. Students participated in a variety of ethical workshops and toured the campus. The following week, they spent another day at Lanier Charter Academy where they were placed in small groups to determine if specific business scenarios had an ethical dilemma. With their group, they had to decide how they would handle the dilemma and then present their cases in front of a panel of business professionals.
In November, 20 DECA & FBLA students spent the day at the AT&T headquarters in Atlanta. While on site, they heard from AT&T staff in charge of Product Management, Marketing, Accessories, Pricing, Social Media, and Store Operations. Students were able to see how what they are learning in class is truly a real world experience.
DECA membership for this year is at $95. We are 14 members away from our goal of 109. That is just 15 members away from exceeding it. It's not too late to join.
This November NF DECA had 18 students compete in our Georgia DECA Online Only Testing. Winners have earned an academy slot at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando this spring. Students competed in Advertising, Buying & Merchandising, Entrepreneurship, Free Enterprise Economics, and Selling.
Winners -
Advertising - 1st Place Diane Bounphasaysonh & 3rd Place Brett Nelson
Buying & Merchandising - 4th Place Nicole Sullivan
Honorable mentions go out to Savannah Epperson, Ashley Kennedy, and Griffin Hausler for being in the top 25 for their categories.
Most categories had over 200 students competing.
Upcoming Reminders
DECA Regional Competition - Saturday, January 24th @ West Forsyth HS - Starts at 10AM - Students should arrive by 9:30AM. Cost is $25. Deadline is January 9th. Must be a paid DECA member.

NFHS Food and Nutrition Students Take First
The Career and Technical Education programs in Forsyth County are long-recognized as some of the most outstanding in the country, and Thursday's nights showcase in the lobby of the Department of Education Building was a perfect example of why. Students in the Food and Nutrition Pathways offered in the Forsyth County Schools focused on making healthy food and lifestyle choices. This group of teachers implemented a lesson including student based researched recipes, taste testing and the science behind cooking to create Forsyth County's first Chili Cook-Off.
After a three week lesson investigating how and why scientific evaluation of foods is conducted, North Forsyth High School, under the direction of Sheri Smith and Kris Hunt, won the first chili cook-off.
Congratulations to student group Morgan Searing, Madison Dirst, Madison Lassiter, and Ismita Hussian for their first place entry of White Bean Chicken Chili.

Tis the Season for Batteries!!!
All of us have disposable batteries on our shopping lists this time of year because so many things require batteries. NFHS would like you to also put "disposable batteries" on your recycle list and save those batteries that have lost their "punch." Bring them to the recycling center at North Forsyth High School. Let's make the commitment to keep the old batteries out of the landfill.

Lunch Time at NFHS
School meals are healthier than ever!! What better way to ensure that your child has a nutritious meal every day at school than by funding their meal account. While it is understandable that students will bring lunches from home, and some students forget their lunch from time to time, we encourage that parents make sure students have money on their lunch accounts for those days. With 2,400 students at NFHS, we cannot call students from class to get lunches that are delivered by parents. Fast food lunches and beverages are not permitted in the lunch room.
Meal payments can always be made by sending cash or checks (payable to the school cafeteria) to the school with your child. You can also fund your students account on-line. Simply register at https://www.mypaymentsplus.com
for the convenience to transfer funds to your child's meal account from home or a smartphone using a valid credit/debit card or checking account.
