Award winning Job Shadow Program

Area High School Students want to Know...

What it is like to work in your job and/or company. The Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to provide workforce development opportunities to local high school students. In 2014, the Job Shadow program earned the Workforce Development award from Fairfax County and Fairfax County Public Schools.

The Youth and Education Committee is recruiting companies to host high school juniors and seniors for the Annual Award Winning Job Shadow Program. Juniors and Seniors from area high schools will spend a day (10 am to 3 pm) observing you or another person in your company doing their job. The Job Shadow program provides students with the opportunity to see what it is really like to be an accountant, engineer, business manager, network administrator, technician, etc.

If your business is interested in hosting a student or students for a one-day job shadow opportunity, please complete the following business profile and send it to Sharon Brown (see details on the form).

Students will attend a mandatory job shadow orientation on January 8, 2015. Then, they will schedule the job shadow date with you at your convenience for a day in January or February 2015. Thank you, we appreciate your support!

COMMUNICATION CORNER: "How to Best Respond to a LinkedIn Business Inquiry"

There are many reasons to use LinkedIn, including the fact that this is a great way to drum up new business. Even though this may not be your primary objective, over time you will find that people are connecting with you in hopes of forming some type of business relationship.

How to Best Respond to a LinkedIn Business Inquiry

In the event that somebody reaches out to discuss a business opportunity, there are five steps you should take when it comes time to respond to an inquiry on Linkedin:

1. Make sure the person and opportunity is legit. Just the same as any online service, there are "spammers" and "scammers" who will reach out to anybody and everybody in an attempt to make money. Don't be duped!

2. Do some research into the person's background. Since you received the message on LinkedIn, this is a great place to start. What is their current position? Where are they located? Which companies have they worked for in the past? From there, you can do a quick Google search to see what else you can find.

3. Answer any questions that were asked of you. This is when you will dive into the opportunity that has been presented, letting the person know if you are interested or not. Tip: while answering questions, don't be afraid to interject your own ideas, explaining why you are the right person for the opportunity. Despite the fact that the other party reached out to you, there is nothing wrong with "selling yourself."

4. Be quick and to the point. LinkedIn is not a place to hold a long conversation. You should be as quick and concise as possible, sharing the necessary information and providing the person with everything they asked of you. If you drag on too long, you take the risk of your note not being read in its entirety.

5. Setup the next action. At the end of your response, suggest the next action, such as a time for a phone call or face to face meeting. If you are truly interested in the opportunity, no matter what it may be, you need to take the initiative in setting up a time for you to take discussions to the next level.

Every LinkedIn business inquiry is unique, however, you can take these five steps to ensure that you are on the right path. As the biggest professional networking site in the world, the more time you spend on LinkedIn the better chance there is that somebody will eventually reach out to discuss a business opportunity.

Coach's Corner:  What's In It For Me

84% of business owners will tell you that their #1 challenge is getting qualified prospects in the door! Don't take this the wrong way, but your prospects don't care about you. They don't care what the name of your business is or how many years you've been in business. They don't care what products or services you offer, or how conveniently located you are. They only care about one thing...

What's In It For Me!

Remember those 5 little words and learn how to use them in your marketing. If you do, you will forever separate your business from your competition and even eliminate them from the minds of your prospects.

Advertising is sales in print. So, you need to think about the unique benefits your products and services offer and showcase that in a persuasive way. You need to emphasize results, not features.

There are 5 major components to good copy and the order of these is essential to success:

  1. Command Attention: This is usually accomplished with the headline. Think of it as slapping your target in the face by focusing on the specific problem that they have which you solve. You need an attention-getter that makes people want to know more about your products and services. The best headlines give a vivid portrayal of the benefits or show how a problem can be avoided with your solution.
  2. Showcase Benefits: You have to showcase the benefits of your products and services and, more importantly, show how they will solve or prevent a problem. Include useful, factual and clear information to show precisely what the benefits are and how they are going to help the customer.
  3. Prove the Benefits: This is where you prove what the advertisement is offering. You need to establish that you have a method to deliver. Consider information that establishes credibility and past performance.
  4. Persuade People to Embrace the Benefits: You need to add compelling reasons for your potential customers to purchase your products and services. Use a hard sell approach and create scarcity. This will enact your potential customers to feel like they have to act now, which leads into the last component.
  5. Call to Action: You need to compel your potential customers to DO something. They need to check out your site, sign up for your newsletter, purchase your products, contact you about something. Offer a freebie - a booklet, checklist, demo, consult, limited time price...the list goes on. There are many ways to get potential customers to the next step in your sales cycle that are high value, low risk!

Good advertisements include all of these components and are not complete without any of them. You can sit down and think through any one of these components, then figure out how to best place them together for the most effectiveness.

Hundreds travel to Tysons seeking a job

The first week of October brought hundreds of people to Tysons with one common goal.... to find a job.  The 4 day event was also to help employers find great talent and show job seekers that they can get to Tysons using the new Silver Line.  The Tysons Jobs Expo, was kicked off with a Workforce Development Symposium at Convene. The all star panel, moderated by Dr. Gerald Gordon of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, addressed the state of the Tysons workforce; the outlook for job growth in Tysons and strategies for developing our workforce.  "Tysons is already the 2nd largest employer in the region" said keynote speaker Stephen Fuller of George Mason University. "The total value of the local jobs to the economy might soon rival DC as the employment center."

Following the Symposium, CVENT, our platinum sponsor, held their own job fair in their new building located on the Greensboro Station metro line.  Tuesday brought out job seekers looking to work in the government contracting arena.  Sponsors Northrop Grumman and Mitre, were joined by Booz Allen, SAIC and C2 Solutions Group to meet with perspective employees.  The Sheraton Tysons Hotel was the last of the 3 days of job fairs on Thursday where we had over 20 businesses with hundreds of open jobs to fill.  Job Seekers had opportunities to walk up to the recruiters and have that personal contact with them.  Throughout the day, there were Career Building Workshops for job seekers as well as onsite expert help from SkillSource Group and the Virginia Employment Commission.

It is our hope that some good connections made.  I want to thank our partners Tysons Partnership and First Financial Security for their tremendous collaboration on this event, our Jobs Expo Taskforce who did all the behind the scenes work, as well as our sponsors CVENT, Northrop Grumman, Convene, Intelsat, MITRE, SkillSource Group, Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, PS Business Parks, WMATA and the Virginia Employment Commission.
