As the year comes to an end, it is my honor, as the Chairman of the Board of the TysonsRegional Chamber of Commerce, to thank everyone who made this a memorable year.

New councils were formed that will further secure our brand as an essential organization for area businesses.  The Chamber also hosted many new events that will continue to thrive in the years to come.

A special thank you goes to Chamber members who added holiday cheer by celebrating the spirit of giving.  The Chamber TIPS lead share groups collected donations throughout the year and raised over $700 for local charities.   At the Holiday Mixer, earlier this month, Chamber members were asked to bring grocery store gift cards for local families in need; $210 in cards were collected and will be given to Facets and Our Daily Bread.

Please allow me to wish you and yours a safe and happy holiday season from the TysonsRegional Chamber of Commerce.

Warm Regards,

Mark S. Rogoff

TRCC, Chairman of the Board

Member Spotlight:  TRCC Teams with UVA for Life Long Learning

Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with our academic partner, the University of Virginia, to assist in developing and participating in programs for our members.   We were hosted at the metro-accessible UVA Falls Church campus for our last GovCon Roundtable event on the Small Business Regulation changes on November 13.

Change is happening quickly in our industries.  Bachelors' degrees that are ten years and older are practically obsolete. The phrase life long learning is the mantra for people in our fields to stay abreast of the latest developments and to work towards certifications needed in today's highly competitive labor market. Currency in education is required to stay competitive both as an individual and for your company to move ahead.

"UVA offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in the fields needed by many TRCC members, for example, procurement and contract management, cyber security, project management, human resources, leadership, and financial planning just to name a few," said Bob Ranson, UVA Regional Outreach Director for Northern Virginia.  "Further, students can use the credits earned in the certificate for undergraduate and graduate degrees."  Dr. Mary Ann Wangemann, former student and current professor/Statewide Director said, "the unique feature of UVA programs is the strong emphasis on partnership and collaboration between government and industry students that exists in the classroom."

Some companies and agencies host cohort programs right at their location.  Cohort programs build comraderie across functional areas and allow students to gain a greater understanding of the materials in relation to their own company's business.  If your company is interested in beginning a cohort in any of our certificate programs, please contact Pete Wynne ([email protected]).

It is not difficult to go back to school.  A commitment of about three hours a week is about all that is needed to get you the skills you need to advance in your current career or move to a new career.  Why not get a jump start on those New Year's resolutions by checking out their website at http://www.scps.virginia.edu). Registration for the upcoming spring 2014 semester begins on December 1, 2013.

If you would like to have your company featured in next month's "Member Spotlight",  email us at [email protected].

Technology Corner: Five Password Management Tools and Why You Need to Use One

Need a reminder of why strong passwords should be at the top of your technological priority list? Consider the story of Houston, TX, parents Marc and Lauren Gilbert, who on August 10th discovered a hacker had compromised their video baby monitor and was shouting lewd comments at their sleeping two-year-old daughter.

How did it happen? According to the family's Internet service provider, a weak or nonexistent password for their Wi-Fi connection was the main culprit. Other high-profile password breaches include the Syrian Electronic Army hacking into the Facebook and Twitter accounts of high-profile news outlets like The New York Post and Washington Post, along with the recent proliferation of security researchers (or "ethical hackers") pointing out the vulnerabilities of home automation systems.
