Lisa Huffman

This month I had the pleasure of participating in the groundbreaking ceremony for Tysons Overlook.  This is a new 11-story complex that is across the street from the Chamber office.  Being able to see the progress of this development everyday from our building is a reminder of what an exciting time this is for the Tysons community.  From the completion of Phase I of the Silver Line by the end of this year to the building of Tysons Tower at Tysons Corner Center, we are starting to see the transformation of the region into a sustainable, vibrant urban area - a place where people live, work and plan; a place where people and businesses want to be.  As your Chamber, we are looking forward to continuing our commitment of  working for you to identify and connect you to all the new opportunities that are being created as Tysons grows .

Officials Break Ground on Tysons Overlook

Construction is underway for another addition to the Tysons skyline.  On Monday, May 6th, Lisa Huffman, our Chamber President along with officials broke ground on Tysons Overlook, an 11-story complex on Jones Branch Drive next to the Gannett/USA Today building.  MRP Realty is constructing the building which will offer more than 300,000 square feet of office space.  "We're excited to build what we think is a landmark asset and an enduring asset on the Tysons skyline," said Bob Murphy, MRP Realty's managing principal.  The building will feature a fitness center, cafe and terrace overlooking the pond next to Gannett/USA Today.

LMI, a private, not-for-profit government-consulting firm based in McLean, will own and occupy six of the Tysons Overlook's 11 floors.  The remaining 138,000 square feet of office and retail space will be available for lease.

As part of Fairfax County's long-term vision for Tysons as a walkable, urban center and economic driver, this is just another step toward that reality.  "It's an exciting time be here and I know [LMI is] going to make a difference in the neighborhood," said U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th).  The event was also attended by Sharon Bulova, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Del. Barbara Comstock (R-34th) and Gerald Gordon, President and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.  "Fairfax County has spent the last six years planning efforts to make Tysons an even better place for doing business," Bulova said. "This is an awesome site."

As the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce, we look forward to welcoming our new neighbors.

TECH CORNER: Data Disasters: Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
by Terry Whearley, CMIT Solutions of Fairfax
Data loss is a relatively common occurrence-- hard drives die and even automated backups sometimes fail to archive every single file correctly.  Data loss becomes catastrophic when a sizable or vital set of data becomes unrecoverable.  Insurers, And read this! Only six percent of mid-size companies that suffer catastrophic data loss ever fully recover.  Yes,you read that correctly--only six percent.  Furthermore, 43% never reopen and 51% close within two years of the disaster. Consider these points if you want your business to survive.
TRAVEL CORNER
by Peter Himmelberger, Owner of Travel Cruise and Tour
Member Benefits is always looking for great deals that benefit our chamber members.  The Tysons Regional Chamber Summer cruise  is one of those events where we have partnered with Travel Cruise and Tour, a fellow chamber member to offer the chamber and our members (and their friends and family) a great get away to Bermuda on board the Royal Caribbean Grandeur of the Seas, departing from Baltimore July 12th.  Imagine, Bermuda in the middle of the summer with your hotel, meals, and entertainment provided, unpack once, something for everyone to do and see!  Plus included is a glass bottom boat tour as well as great prices on golf, sightseeing, beach and sea excursions and more.

Join up and meet some of your fellow chamber members in a totally different setting! (Use the Chamber password - TRCC, all caps to get into the site).

Speaking of travel, here are some Travel Tips to make any trip more enjoyable:
Passports - Scan your passport and send as an attachment to an email to yourself and a relative/friend.  If you lose everything, you can get to a computer in an internet cafe or embassy and retrieve your passport from your web mail access.  Ditto for travel or tour vouchers and other important trip documents.  This is in addition to copies of your passport in your luggage and carry on.

Travel News - Now is the time to book your winter holiday vacations.  School break time sells out every year on cruises, and most Caribbean resorts and prices increase as Labor Day  approaches.  Costa Rica is an excellent family vacation location.
