Lisa Huffman

Sunday, April 7th was a fantastic day for the Chamber's inaugural 5K Corporate Challenge!  I would like to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers, teams and individuals who got up early (and braved the chilly morning) to come out and support a wonderful cause -- TAPS. I would especially like to thank our sponsors: Tysons Corner Center, Cardinal Bank, Grove Spine and Sport, Athleta, PR Running, Harris Teeter, Massage Envy, Metro DC DJs and DKG Design. This event would not have been possible without their support. A special thank you also goes to Delegate Mark Keam and Fairfax County Board of Supervisor John Foust for joining us and cheering on our runners.

For me, personally, it was exciting to see so many businesses come together to support the event. Not only did they give their time and donations but they encouraged their employees to get involved as well. As a Chamber we strive to be your link to business opportunities but we are also committed to bringing everyone together to build and grow "one community".

Thank you again for your support and dedication and we will see you next year for our Second Annual 5K Corporate Challenge!

Lisa Huffman, TRCC President

Runners and sponsors raised over $13,000 for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), this year's benefactor.  Click here to see who the top finishers were.

The Real Scoop on Dog Poop: An Overlooked Environmental Pollutant

by Dave Jensen, DoodyCalls Corp

In America, we love our dogs - except when it comes to dealing with the waste they leave behind. This Earth Day, remember to pick up after your pets. Maybe this doesn't make the headlines like global warming, but find out here why every scoop makes a difference.

COMMUNICATIONS CORNER:
"So...what do you do?" -- The Three D's
of an Effective Capabilities Brochure
By David Young, Allegra Printing & Imaging

For many small to mid-sized business owners, answering the question, "What do you do?" can be a challenge. And the response can be a moving target, especially in a company that is growing or adjusting to new market realities. Just as you give consideration to your "elevator speech", think about what your printed collateral says. Here's some help

TECH CORNER: Making Virtual Teams More Productive with the Right Tools
by Terry Whearley, CMIT Solutions of Fairfax
As the landscape of the modern office changes, so does the way we get work done. We often find ourselves closely interacting with co-workers who aren't in the same physical location, whether they're on a different floor or in a different hemisphere. Some ideas on how to improve and sustain productivity between team members in different locations can be found in Terry's article here
TRAVEL TIPS: Protect Your Stuff, Think Ahead, and Cover Up
by Peter Himmelberger, Owner of Travel Cruise and Tour
Protect your luggage. Take a photo of yourself with your suitcase for reference. Protect privacy by using business addresses and phone numbers on luggage tags. Keep a business card inside in case your tag is lost. Thinking about a river cruise?  2013 is over 90% sold out in Europe. Get deals now while exchange rates are low, or book now for 2014. Cover up. When visiting religious landmarks, avoid wearing shorts or skirts above the knee, cut-offs, or torn jeans. Bring a light sweater or scarf to cover your head or shoulders.
