Tana Keefe

Welcome to Spring! Warm weather is around the corner, new business plans have been taking shape and personal goals are in the works. If one of your goals entails fitness or giving back to the community, then you are in luck! The Tysons Regional Chamber has partnered with TAPS -- Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors -- for its first 5K Corporate Challenge. You can sign up to run or walk and have fun while doing it!

The funds we will raise will flow directly into TAPS programming which supports these families through an amazing network of resources, seminars and publications. TAPS provides these services at no charge to survivors from all branches of the service, including Reserves and National Guard.

We would also like to thank Tysons Corner Center for the use of their premises and their logistics support for our event. We look forward to seeing you all.

GovCon Successfully Launched by Tony Barnett, Leros Technologies Corp

On Friday March 8th, over 30 businesses participated in the first GovCon Debrief. This roundtable luncheon discussion addressed de-escalation, the critical issue for contractors especially after the enactment of sequestration. The discussion touched on contract funding, financial stability, business development and options for the reduction of operating expenses. Attendees at the event from the GovCon, financial, staffing and technology industries gave positive feedback about the information learned provided and the format of the event. For more information on this event and what is upcoming see the full article.

Casino Night Was a Winner

If you took a chance and attended the 2013 Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce Casino Night, then you were a big winner. Fun was had by all. From the excellent food donated by local restaurants to black jack and silent auctions, there were many ways to score big fun. Since the theme was Monte Carlo, many of our members looked like they stepped out of a James Bond movie.

Thanks to our many sponsors, including our Title and Bar Sponsor, Raging Wire Data Centers, Casino Night was definitely a winning hand. This year, a portion of the proceeds went to the Women's Center of Vienna. A special thanks goes to them for the great work they do. Pictures of the event have been posted on our   Facebook page.

March is Women's History Month

The Fairfax County Commission for Women and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors proclaimed Women's History Month 2013 on Tuesday, March 5th. The Women's History Month 2013 proclamation recipient was Dr. Joy R. Hughes, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at George Mason University. Preceding the proclamation ceremony, a reception was held honoring Dr. Hughes and other women in STEM professions.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. The good news -- and there is good news -- is that most deaths from colorectal cancer are preventable. Regular screenings are key to preventing colorectal cancer, and while the vast majority of the cases we see are in men and women ages 50 or older, it's important to note that the incidence rates in adults under the age of 50 has been increasing, making early detection of this cancer vitally important. Colorectal screenings identify precancerous polyps whose removal prevents the cancer from developing further. In addition, if the cancer is detected early, treatments often lead to full recovery. More vital information can be found here.
TECH CORNER: When Using Public Wi-Fi, Secure Your Data Using a VPN
by Terry Whearley, CMIT Solutions of Fairfax
Whether you're leisurely browsing the headlines at your local coffee shop or catching up on emails while you wait for your flight to board, just about everybody likes taking advantage of public Wi-Fi hotspots. But did you know that you may have used public Wi-Fi networks to view webpages over an unencrypted connection, send emails in plain text, and even use passwords to access online accounts? A Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is a 'must have' if you or your staff access your company's network remotely from one of these public Wi-Fi networks. Or even from home. Find out why, and how in this article.
