As we get ready to welcome a new year, I would like to take a moment to look back on the many accomplishments of 2012.... In its 19thyear Casino Night continued to be a crowd favorite as guests tested their lady luck while sampling food from local restaurants; Oktoberfest - not only a community event but, more importantly, a fun-filled family day; the Chamber's Business and Service Awards - honoring individuals and organizations that give so much to the region; and Doors Opening: New City Centers of Tysons - a program that gave us all an exciting look into the future of Tysons. Unique opportunities to network and bridge the gap between business and the community through our successful programs is and will continue to be our focus.
We also moved our office when we rebranded to become the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce. By doing so we are expanding our reach and providing our members with many more opportunities. You will continue to be able to leverage the services and experience of a chamber who, for decades has forged alliances, created synergies and business partnerships from a truly regional perspective.
In addition we established our newsletter, The Link and started Tysons T.V., the Chamber's own television show. Both are ways to ensure that we are keeping our members informed about what is happening and how it affects your business and the community we live in.
In 2013 you can look forward to some new opportunities to get involved and to give back, such as Executive Leadership lunch programs, policy briefings and a 5K Corporate Challenge benefitting TAPS.
I want to thank each of you for your support this past year and for your continued support as we move into 2013. It is truly an honor to serve you!
Have a wonderful and safe holiday!

FEATURE: 'Tis the Season to be Shopping
You don't have to visit Manhattan to ooh and aah at holiday retail displays. The area's historic retail pockets and explosive new growth are all in bloom for December shoppers. GROWTH: Economic Gifts for the Tysons Area: Inova & Intelsat News
Inova Health System will break ground in 2014 on the Inova Comprehensive Cancer and Research Institute, a $252 million, 300,000-square-foot facility that will likely be the Washington region's largest cancer treatment and research facility. The Washington Business Journal reports Inova Board Chairman Stephen Cumbie as saying that the center will play a crucial role in positioning Inova as a "destination" health care provider. -- In other Inova news, Inova Health System has acquired Amerigroup Virginia Inc., a state subsidiary of Amerigroup Corp. that processes claims and maintains health networks for 55,000 beneficiaries of Medicaid and other publicly funded insurance plans..) -- Intelsat S.A. is making Tysons Corner their new U.S. Headquarters in the Macerich Co.'s Tysons Tower. The site won over other Virginia, DC and Maryland locations for its amenities, metro and highway access, and proximity to Dulles airport. |
TRANSPORTATION: Santa Reports that the 495 Express Lanes are a GO!
The 495 Express Lanes are open and commuters are getting accustomed to the new traffic patterns, but Santa made a special maiden voyage on Nov. 16. Opting for a 2.5 Tesla Roadster convertible instead of reindeer, Santa sailed from Braddock Road to the Express Lanes exit at Westpark Drive for easy access to his winter wonderland house inside Tysons Corner Center. For details on how the Express Lanes might ease your commute, visit www.495expresslanes.com.

VENTS: Chamber Welcomes Madison Madrigals on December 13th
Once again the Chamber was excited to bring to our holiday lunch guests the dulcet tones of the Madison Madrigal singing group. This 25-student ensemble from James Madison High School is an accomplished group that performs all over the DC Metro area, especially during the holiday season. Claire Rowan, who has directed the group for nine years, has even taken the group to entertain at the Kennedy Center. The students are proud to share that last year they received a grant from the Wolftrap Foundation for Education: they had a piece commissioned which they premiered there in the spring. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this long-standing Chamber holiday tradition. You can also see their full holiday performance December 19th at 7:30pm in the JMHS Auditorium. Watch this clip from a past Holiday Concert, but don't miss the live show! |
COMMUNICATIONS CORNER: Marketing Strategies for the New Year
by Peg McDermott
The internet is a highly dynamic and quickly changing environment, and what works for you during one year may not be appropriate the following year. It's time to review results and plan for 2013. Social media has taken center stage over the past couple of years - this is something that wasn't so much of a factor five years ago, but now it's essential to any online marketing effort. And as we head into 2013, the place where visual and social cross over is becoming more and more important. Networks like Pinterest and Instagram became huge in 2012, and they're not showing any signs of slowing down over the coming months. This means that when you're starting to plan for next year, you'll want to incorporate visual social media into your strategy more than ever before. Click here to read the rest of the article. |

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Karin's Florist
Karin's Florist isn't just a pretty place visit, it's a 56-year old family business with a long history with the Chamber. President Maris Angolia says that the company, started by her Grandfather and named after her sister (also a long-time Chamber member), has been a Chamber member since they moved to Vienna 18 years ago. Maris says "through the Chamber, we were able to meet other area businesses, as well as local and county government officials. Membership has helped my business in so many ways, it's hard to put into words." Involvement is key, Maris says, and she speaks from experience-as a past Board Chair, and a member or chair of more than a dozen Chamber committees and events. She even met her husband at a Chamber networking event!
