Welcome Celeste Amato, ABAG's New President! December 3, 2012 - today we are pleased to welcome Celeste Amato as ABAG's new President. Celeste comes to ABAG with an inspiring leadership background in public service and succeeds Betsy Nelson, President since 1990, who retired at the end of November. "I want to thank the ABAG Board, Betsy Nelson, and staff for such a welcoming and well-organized transition and to thank the many association members and partners who have reached out with congratulations and good wishes. I feel fortunate and honored to be selected to represent and lead the regional grantmaking community" says Celeste. She can be reached at: [email protected] - please help us welcome Celeste Amato!

My tenure as the President of the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG) has come to an end, and with it, the completion of my telling the great stories of philanthropy and stories about the role nonprofit organizations play in our community and our world. Today, on December 3, I enthusiastically welcome Celeste Amato to ABAG, as its new President - By Betsy Nelson, December 3, 2012 |
On November 27, #ABAGMember United Way of Central Maryland and many of its local funded partners joined #Giving Tuesday™ - a national effort that launched the giving season and that is transforming philanthropy into something easy, achievable and trendy. |
Grantmakers detest saying no to worthy nonprofit organizations struggling to meet increased community needs in our recovering economy. But across the country, government dollars are cut; charitable giving is flat; and requests are up. Get ready to say "no" more often. |
Sometimes in the midst of a new endeavor, you suddenly realize where you've come from. When HEFN Director Kathy Sessions, Phil Johnson from the Heinz Endowments and Amy Panek from the Park Foundation spoke to the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers' (ABAG) Green Funders' October session on fracking, I remembered something. I remembered how earlier funder conversations involving HEFN members had been instrumental in moving us to action on toxics. |
Community Foundations Invest in Maryland's Future
Last month we joined with more than 700 community foundations across America and the 14 #ABAGMember community foundations that serve Maryland for National Community Foundation Week to tell the stories of lives changed, jobs created, and communities transformed through philanthropy's partnership with private and public community leaders and organizations. |
Many Americans Unaware of Healthcare Law Changes
A survey released Monday found that 30 percent of likely Maryland voters describe themselves as knowing "a lot" about the coming changes. "Most Maryland voters don't fully understand the law," said Nikki Highsmith Vernick, president of #ABAGMember the Horizon Foundation, the nonprofit based in Howard County that sponsored the study. "The people who stand to benefit the most know the least about it" - Washington Post, November 21, 2012 |
Weinberg Foundation's Annual Community Gathering
#ABAGMember The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation recently hosted its Annual Community Gathering, a celebration of the Foundation's mission, partnerships, and past year's accomplishments. |
