Regular Meeting of the Governing Board

Tuesday, August 11, 2015

The Board of Trustees approved the second and final reading of the following board policies:

  • BP 4030 Nondiscrimination in Employment
  • BP 0410 Nondiscrimination in District Programs and Activities
  • BP 5145.3 Nondiscrimination/Harassment
  • BP 3312 Contracts
  • AR 4218 Dismissal/Suspension/Disciplinary Action

The Board of Trustees received an update on the District's Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Plan. BSD is in the process of developing the district's TK-8 VAPA plan and will have a formal presentation to the Board at the September 8th meeting.

Our Visual and Performing Art Plan is taking shape and we are kicking off our 1st year of implementation with our Summer Institute on Tuesday, August 25th and Wednesday, August 26th with Arts Ed Matters consultants. Approximately 75 teachers will be attending for two full days of learning about the Integrated Arts model in the visual and performing arts.

Day one will be an introduction to theater and the visual arts and learning the concept of Making Learning Visible (MLV) with learning walls which are examples of student learning and art integration.

Day two will be an introduction to arts integration in the classroom, how to engage students, and linking the arts with core curriculum.

Our District will be working throughout this school year with two Arts Integrated Specialists (or AIS's) from Arts Ed Matters. They will be working directly with our administrators and teachers, as well as with our parent community. The district will receive 25 hours a month of support with modeling lessons, providing on-site professional development. They will assist in the development of curriculum-based on the National Standards for Art Education which connect with the Common Core English Language Arts and Math standards. Additionally, they will be supporting site VAPA meetings, as well as attending the district VAPA committee meetings.

The agenda and supporting documents for all meetings are posted on the district web page.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maggie MacIsaac
Superintendent
