Nuclear Imaging Upgrades Benefit Equine and Small Animal Patients Alike
UW Veterinary Care is the only animal hospital in Wisconsin to offer nuclear scintigraphy, an imaging technique that uses small doses of radioisotopes and a gamma camera to assess how well certain organs are functioning and to detect bone problems, like fractures, arthritis, and cancer. And now, thanks to a few recent upgrades, nuclear imaging at UWVC is even faster, more detailed, and less stressful for animal patients. Learn more.
Pet Tip: Poison Prevention

Last month we mentioned some common foods that could be harmful to pets. Now that warmer weather is here, there are outdoor dangers to be aware of as well. For example, the leaves and flowers of lilies, especially Easter lilies, are toxic to cats. If you suspect your feline has ingested either, get her to a veterinarian right away, and bring along a leaf and flower sample.

Our Emergency and Critical Care Service is available 24/7 to help. In the event of an emergency, call 800-386-8684.
Pulmonary Hypertension Study

Our Cardiology Service is seeking dogs with pulmonary hypertension for a clinical trial investigating whether a common canine genetic variant affects the severity of disease or its response to the oral medication sildenafil citrate, the most commonly used drug for the treatment of this condition. The study will help provide better guidelines for the treatment of dogs with pulmonary hypertension. More.

Featured Service: Equine Surgical Services

UW Veterinary Care's Equine Surgery Service features two board-certified specialists, one additional veterinarian, three residents, and support from multiple certified veterinary technicians. They offer primary, referral, and consultative services and provide routine, emergency and intensive care 24/7.

Our experts work in three sub-specialties, including orthopedics (fracture repair and joint and limb assessment), soft tissue (colic surgery, Cesarean sections, castrations, and ovariectomies), and sports medicine (lameness evaluation and treatment and athletic assessments). In fact, we have Wisconsin's only board-certified specialist in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation.

We also offer acoustoelastography, a highly advanced method (only available at UW) that uses ultrasound to evaluate equine tendon injuries; the state's only dynamic endoscope for evaluating breathing issues while a horse moves naturally with a rider (not on a treadmill); and regenerative medicine techniques, such as platelet-rich plasma therapy.
