Class of 1991 graduate Scott Spaulding is a key part of an effort to get veterinarians to uti­lize a new app that could help transform veterinary medical practice. Vet24Seven lets clients consult directly with their veterinarians via live chat or video conference. It can help pet owners gain quick access to information from a trusted source and determine if their animals require emergency care or are experiencing a minor issue.

School's Partnership with Community Saves Baby Crane 
A young Wisconsin sandhill crane is back to full health and has flown south for the winter thanks to a partnership between the UW School of Veterinary Medicine, Dane County Humane Society's Four Lakes Wildlife Center, and a local wildlife rehabilitator.

SVM's Comparative Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program Earns High Ranking
The Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBMS) graduate program again ranked in the top 10 for the veterinary medical sciences discipline in the 2014-15 academic year, according to the most recent data from the Academic Analytics Database.

UNESCO Honors Kawaoka with Carlos J. Finlay Prize
Yoshihiro Kawaoka, professor of pathobiological sciences at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected for the 2015 Carlos J. Finlay UNESCO Prize for his overall contributions to the field of microbiology. 

First Database of U.S. Shelter Animals Launches 
Sandra Newbury, assistant professor and director of the UW Shelter Medicine Program, serves on the board for Shelter Animals Countan initiative that has launched a national database of sheltered animal statistics in order to gain a greater understanding of the issues facing rescues and shelters across the country.

Morris Animal Foundation Selects SVM Alumna for Investigator Award
Class of 1990 alumna Kathryn M. Meurs was named the first recipient of the Morris Animal Foundation's Mark L. Morris Jr. Investigator Award. The award focuses on canine mitral valve disease, the most common cause of heart disease in dogs.

Class of 2010 Alumna Receives ACVR Award
Connie Fazio, a 2010 graduate of the UW School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and a current SVM resident, received an award for outstanding oral presentation from the American College of Veterinary Radiologists (ACVR).

Ongoing Clinical Trials

Recruiting Dogs with Osteosarcoma
This clinical trial led by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and sponsored by the Morris Animal Foundation seeks to evaluate in dogs with osteosarcoma the safety and effectiveness of Standard of Care therapy with or without adjuvant rapamycin administration. Participating dogs will undergo surgical amputation of the affected limb and will return to UW Veterinary Care every three weeks for 15 weeks for evaluation. Costs associated with this study and study-related evaluations will be covered. In addition, $1,000 will be provided toward the cost of surgical amputation. Learn more
