Welcome Back
The students have returned, football has started, and fall is definitely in the air. I want to welcome all of our students back to the SVM after what I hope was a great summer.
First, some bittersweet news. Three of our long-standing faculty and staff -- Becky Badimassoud, Sheila McGuirk, and Chris Olsen -- are retiring in the coming months. I want to thank each of them for all that they've done to create the school that we all know and love and wish them all the best in their retirement.
Thanks to individuals like these, our school boasts many achievements, and I'd like to highlight several recent accomplishments on the research side of things. Over the last three years, the school has doubled its research grant support from $10.9 million in FY12 to $21.7 million in FY15. This success is a testament to our faculty, staff, and students who advance the research mission of the school to the benefit of both animal and human health.
I'm also pleased to announce that the school has initiated a formal DVM/PhD program. We are still working out some of the details, but we anticipate admitting a total of eight students over the course of the next eight years and maintaining that number going forward. Look for more information on the program in the coming weeks and months.
One final research highlight - our Fall Research Day will be held on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, followed by an All-SVM Gathering at 4:30 p.m. in the second floor lounge. This event enables all of our students, and our first-year students in particular, to be exposed to the broad array of research activities that occur throughout the school. I'm happy to announce that the school is actively moving forward with its Capital Campaign to raise the funds necessary to build an attached addition to the Veterinary Medicine Building in the west half of lot 62. We will be holding a number of campaign events in the coming months, including one in Milwaukee in September, one in Madison in October, and two in Florida in the winter. These will be coordinated with campus Comprehensive Campaign events. The public launch of UW-Madison's Comprehensive Campaign will be in October.
Last, but certainly not least, the All-SVM Gathering this month is in Marshall Park adjacent to my house in Middleton on Sept. 11 at 5:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there. Have a great year!
Sincerely,
Mark Markel Dean

- The summer 2015 issue of Comparatively Speaking, our newsletter for alumni of our graduate program, is available online, and you can find print copies in a few locations throughout the Veterinary Medicine Building and Hanson Labs. This will be the last issue of Comparatively Speaking as an independent publication. Starting in spring 2016, it will be included as a separate section in On Call, which will broaden the audience for the newsletter and the frequency with which we communicate about graduate program activities.

- Daryl Fields, a doctoral student in our Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBMS) Graduate Program who is also pursuing his medical degree has been awarded fellowships from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF)/Merck Science Initiative.
-
And congratulations to our recent CBMS graduates. Ermias Amene, William Bracamonte-Baron, David Gasper, and Brock Kingstad-Bakke have earned their PhD's, and Maria Arendt and Ryan Dashek have completed master's degrees.
|
- Congratulations are in order for Tracy Baker, who has been promoted to associate professor with tenure, and Brenda Mulherin, who has passed the certifying examination of the American Veterinary Dental College.
- I'm proud to announce that Karen Moriello has been awarded the International Society of Feline Medicine/Hill's Pet Nutrition Award for Outstanding Contributions to Feline Medicine for her career's worth of positive impact on the field of feline dermatology.
-
Welcome to our two new department administrators, Rachel Crawford (Medical Sciences) and Kerry Ludke (Comparative Biosciences).
|
- As I mentioned above, the school continues to grow the amount of research funding it brings in each year, and here are three reasons why. Congratulations to Xuan Pan and Susie Sample who have each earned mentored research (K01) grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for studies in oncology and neuropathology, respectively, and Ted Golos, who has secured an NIH resource development (R24) grant to develop a primate model of Parkinson's Disease.

UW Veterinary Care Director's Updates
|
- Beginning Sept. 28, we will have an out-patient diagnostic imaging service. Staffed by our own Brian Jones, we will be able to see patients referred to our diagnostic imaging service for in-house radiography or ultrasonography. With this expansion, we will be able to accommodate a larger radiographic consultation caseload, which will allow us to offer our radiographic consultation services at a lower, more competitive fee.
-
Our new feline- and small exotic animal-focused exam and waiting rooms are now complete and in use, and they look wonderful! Thank you to Melita Grunow, Ann and Guy Nakamura, and Paula Varner for their generous donations to this project. -
And here's our latest positive review from a happy client:
"Very thorough history-taking, proposed diagnostic tests, differential diagnoses, and next steps/treatment options very thoroughly explained. Providers were patient, knowledgeable, and kind. Truly, everyone from the front desk staff, to the student (Lauren), to Dr. Grint was exceptional. I am so grateful to have been pointed in your direction. What a wonderful service you provide!"
