Be a Partner

As you may have noticed, the state, university, and UW Hospital and Clinics Partners in Giving campaign launched a couple of weeks ago, and I'd like to encourage you to give to the charity or charities of your choice through this program. Susan Christenson is chair of the campaign for the School of Veterinary Medicine; please feel free to contact her if you have any questions regarding the program or how to participate.

As I mentioned last month, I'm excited that we are expanding our Shelter Medicine Program, to be led by Sandra Newbury. One point of clarification from my last dean's message, it was rightly pointed out to me that the school has had a long-standing shelter program led by Dr. Ron Schultz for 20+ years. Others such as Sandra, Laurie Larsen, Karen Moriello, Bliss Theil, Kate Hurley at the University of California-Davis, and others have been a critical part of this program over the years.

In October, the school launched its first Fall Research Day with presentations by Lyric Bartholomay, Theresa Ollivett, and Troy Hornberger. I want to thank Dale Bjorling for organizing this event, which concluded with an all-SVM get-together. I'd also like to congratulate Dale and Chad Vezina on their major role in a cross-campus collaborative effort that has earned an $8.3 million grant to fund a new urological research center, one of only three of its kind in the country.

Last, yesterday was our annual Halloween costume contest, and I want to thank and congratulate everyone who participated. Fun was certainly had by all! We'll have photos up on the school's Facebook page soon.

Sincerely,

Mark D. Markel
Dean

Upcoming Events
  • Red Cross Logo The SVM Fall Blood Drive will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13 in room 2255 of the Veterinary Medicine Building. I encourage you all to participate to help keep the blood banks full and maintain the school's position as the leading UW Donor Club in campus.

School News
  • Thank you to all faculty who represented us by serving as speakers at the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association Convention last month. This includes Jonathan Bach, Hattie Bortnowski, Peter Muir, Sandra Newbury, Theresa Ollivett, and Julie Walker. Your efforts are much appreciated!
  • Holiday Card Dog The holidays are fast approaching, so as you're looking for gift ideas, I'd like to remind you that the school's annual holiday gift cards are now available. For a suggested $10 donation per card, we'll send a holiday greeting card to the recipient of your choice, including a message stating that a donation was made in his or her name. All proceeds will benefit projects that improve animal health. We have two options this year - a cat card and a dog card - featuring wonderful artwork donated by artist Audrey Christie.
Student News
  • AABP Student Awards Our students once again represented us well at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference. Congratulations to Jenn Holle and Peter Strassburg for each earning two scholarships/awards. You make us proud!
  • Congratulations to Jianqiang Wu for earning his PhD from the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program.

Faculty and Staff News
  • Our faculty and staff continue to earn recognition for their efforts on and off campus. Congratulations to Yoshihiro Kawaoka for earning the 2014 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award for his contributions to understanding and preventing pandemic flu, and to Diego Calderon for recently receiving the Community Shares of Wisconsin's Backyard Hero Award for his long-time volunteer service with Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger.

  • Congratulations to Ted Golos, who has been elected the new chair of the Comparative Biosciences Department, effective January 1. My thanks to Linda Schuler for serving in this role on an interim basis.

  • We have some newly boarded faculty to recognize -- Neil Christensen in radiation oncology, Jayme Hoffberg in emergency and critical care, and Christoph Mans in zoological medicine. Well done!

  • You may have seen Ebola in the news quite a bit lately, and you may have also seen our faculty weighing in on the topic as well. Tony Goldberg has made recent appearances on the local news and Wisconsin Public Radio, and Yoshihiro Kawaoka offered insights into his own research in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
