Charles Duval Appointed Director of Corporate Partnerships and Business Solutions for CareerSource Palm Beach County
West Palm Beach, Fla. (May 5, 2016) - CareerSource Palm Beach County announced today that Charles Duval was named Director of Corporate Partnerships and Business Solutions, reporting to President and CEO Steve Craig. Mr. Duval will have overall responsibility for CareerSource operations in western Palm Beach County, including the West Career Center located in Belle Glade where area residents and employers are assisted with employment and training activities.
Mr. Duval most recently served as West Career Center Manager and community liaison for the Glades communities. In addition to those responsibilities, he will direct county operations in all areas west of the Florida Turnpike to deliver the programs and services businesses need while maintaining productive relationships with industry, business and community agencies.

Not many people can remember the grade they got in second grade for reading, or in sixth grade for science or as a freshman for history, but for Ashley Wilson, that's easy, she's been making straight As since she was in kindergarten.
Ashley Wilson is the 2016 valedictorian of Pahokee High School.
So it came as no surprise that the 17-year-old Belle Glade resident is Pahokee High School's valedictorian.
"Of course I was excited," said Wilson. "But there was also a sort of confirmation and feeling of security."

The National Center for Victims of Crime, in conjunction with Florida Sheriffs Association, The Florida Council Against Sexual Violence, The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, The Chiefs of Police, MADD and St. Thomas School of Law, will be offering a free training seminar for criminal justice practitioners, victim advocates, mental health therapists and other allied professionals. The seminar, Civil Justice for Victims of Crime in Florida, will explore how victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, child sex abuse, drunk driving, homicide, workplace violence, terrorism, elder abuse, identity theft and financial and property crimes can use civil lawsuits to obtain justice, hold responsible parties accountable, prevent future crimes, and obtain the financial resources victims need to rebuild their lives. The program will cover resources and strategies for victims considering civil lawsuits, and will include a panel of attorneys to answer specific questions of Florida law.

Preventing Child Bullying In Schools and In the Community
Dr. Susan Limber is the Dan Olweus Distinguished Professor at Clemson University and a national leader in efforts to prevent bullying. She is one of the key developers of the National Bullying Prevention Campaign, aimed at "tweens" or children between the ages of 9 and 13. This is the key age for preventing bullying. Dr. Limber will address the impacts of bullying on both the child who is bullied and the bully and on other children with special reference to vulnerable children such as children with autism and other disabilities. She will also describe the Olweus Program, the most widely used and effective evidence based anti-bullying program in the world. 2016 Putting Kids First: Community Back To School Bash - Registration Deadline Is June 17th
We are thrilled to announce the 2016 Putting Kids First: Community Back to School Bash! This wonderful annual event will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at six (6) locations throughout the County, and we need your assistance with registering all kids in need in our Countywide Community Revitalization Team (CCRT) communities. As you probably know, the Office of Community Revitalization (OCR) has been partnering with the Community Back to School Bash (CBSB) collaborative to provide school supplies to kids in need from Kindergarten to 12th grade. The program is a countywide initiative of government working in partnership with the Community Back to School Bash (BASH) and other community service organizations to provide children in need with school supplies and backpacks. The program is implemented through an annual event funded by Palm Beach County and the CBSB collaborative, comprised of more than 60 nonprofit and other agencies.

Here on the island, the average person made about $118,000 in 2014, according to U.S. Census estimates. But just 40 miles west of the Southern Boulevard Bridge, individuals make do with a lot less. In Belle Glade and Pahokee, the average income per person in 2014 did not reach $14,500. And in the city of South Bay, which had about 5,000 residents in 2014, according to the U.S. Census, the average income per person was about $6,000."There are a lot of people who are working really hard to have very little," said Karis Engle, president and CEO of the Glades Initiative. Earning its nonprofit status in 2002, the Glades Initiative helps under-served residents of far western Palm Beach County access health and human services. It provides community resource educators for people interested in applying for state and federal resources, keeps a list of local events and meetings, offers language training and operates a food bank.
EmpowHER Leadership Academy for Girls will empower female students from various schools throughout the Palm Beach County District. The academy supports diversity and would introduce the junior and senior girls to organizations that are led by women executives and will focus on job shadowing, interview skills, resume writing, effective communication both verbal and written, career exploration and much more. The Leadership Academy is free and open to twenty (20) young ladies thanks to the generous donations of our sponsors. The Leadership Academy will meet once a month during the Palm Beach County School District calendar beginning in September of 2016, with eight (8) planned business tours in the areas of Leadership Empowerment (leadership and branding), Political Empowerment, Economic Empowerment and Education Empowerment. Training will be provided from Palm Beach County's Women Experts. The Leadership Academy participants will also be provided with a trip to Tallahassee to tour the Florida State Capitol. The tour would offer the girls an opportunity to meet face-to-face with legislators and learn more about the political process. Upon completion of the program in May of 2017, participants will finish with a leadership certificate and community service hours to be awarded during our year end Student Achievement Awards Program.
Criteria to participate:
* Full-time student in Palm Beach County School System
* Grade Point Average (GPA) of a 2.5 and higher
* Essay describing why you feel you are a good candidate for this program
