Local News: Glades Initiative Serves Thousands in Western Communities

We were thrill to have Palm Beach Daily News Publish this Article

Here on the island, the average person made about $118,000 in 2014, according to U.S. Census estimates. But just 40 miles west of the Southern Boulevard Bridge, individuals make do with a lot less. In Belle Glade and Pahokee, the average income per person in 2014 did not reach $14,500. And in the city of South Bay, which had about 5,000 residents in 2014, according to the U.S. Census, the average income per person was about $6,000."There are a lot of people who are working really hard to have very little," said Karis Engle, president and CEO of the Glades Initiative. Earning its nonprofit status in 2002, the Glades Initiative helps under-served residents of far western Palm Beach County access health and human services. It provides community resource educators for people interested in applying for state and federal resources, keeps a list of local events and meetings, offers language training and operates a food bank.

Ain't I A Woman! Core Ensemble Performance

Ain't I a Woman! celebrates the life and times of four powerful African American women: former Belle Glade resident renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and fiery abolitionist Sojourner Truth, exuberant folk artist Clementine Hunter, and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age, and contemporary concert music by African Americans. Chamber Music Theatre is unique performance format developed by the Core Ensemble featuring a marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance actress. Deltoiya Goodman portrays multiple characters while interacting with the onstage musical trio of cello, piano and percussion. Since 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured in every region of the United States and internationally to Australia, England, Russia, Ukraine, and the British Virgin Islands. The Core Ensemble has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, The Palm Beach County Cultural Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music. Nonprofit Chamber of Palm Beach County 2016 Annual Conference

Do they know how to manage or lead others successfully? This fast-paced conference will energize you with a combination of serious leadership training information and targeted humor. The target audience is the "Work Leader," those who have a leadership title and role, whether it's a new position or not. These CEOs, EDs and VPs are expected to roll up their sleeves and contribute a healthy dose of work daily, all while managing and leading others and overseeing the operation. Many nonprofits rarely have the luxury or take the time to help staff transition into that role of manager and leader. You'll leave this conference with solid information on how to do just that.

Local News: Glades Central Valedictorian Wants to Focus on Environment

Glades Central High School valedictorian Lauren Diaz wants every high school student to know that getting to the top isn't necessarily just for the smart kids. "I wasn't always at the top of my class. I was a terrible student. I entered high school with a 1.7 grade point average and ranked in the lower 10 percent of my class. I even failed gym at one point," laughed Diaz. "I hate to say it." Toward the end of her freshman year, Diaz decided enough was enough."I guess I had an epiphany," said Diaz. "I was just sitting on my bed reflecting on my life, seeing everybody else I know succeeding. I thought, I'm better than that. I know I'm capable. I was just very determined to change my lifestyle and what people deemed my fate. For me, people saw how I was, assumed I was going to be stuck here." Instead the 18-year-old Belle Glade resident recommitted herself to academics. She enrolled in the rigorous Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program, took Advanced Placement classes and was the first in her class to be dual enrolled at Palm Beach State College. Diaz will graduate with a 3.7 GPA and a HPA of 4.7.

Local News: The Jim Moran Foundation Provides Grant to Further Children's Singing Program in The Glades

The Jim Moran Foundation announced the award of a 3-year $105,000 grant to the award-winning Young Singers of the Palm Beaches.  This grant provides the funding to expand the "Choir in the Glades" free satellite choral instruction program that Young Singers started in 2014 in the underserved Glades region of Palm Beach County.  Just as the original non-profit started, the Choir in the Glades began with several dozen elementary school children and is now able to expand into middle school, allowing current members to continue to grow with the Glades community children's choir. Choir in the Glades is led by music professionals living in the Glades community, and provides vocal instruction, singing and life skills enrichment during after-school hours. As our current choir members progress through school, having a middle school choir for them to continue singing with is an important asset to open vistas for their future success.  Plans are underway to present the Middle School program as a partnership with Lake Shore Middle School in Belle Glade this coming fall.  More details are forthcoming on the program.
