Local News: Community Works Together To Help Man In Need Of Ramp Access

When Jelena Curtis, a family nurse consultant for Alzheimer's Community Care in Pahokee, visited a man referred to her daycare program, it set into motion the work of a number of different community members and organizations to help the man. Although he had just moved into a new trailer, the man had been unable to leave his house. Requiring a wheelchair to get around, he relied on friends to come to his home and help him maneuver the simple steps leading into his home. Today, the man is able to leave freely, with a sturdy, beautiful new ramp allowing him to come and go as he pleases. Most importantly, he will now be able to catch the bus to visit Ms. Curtis at her Pahokee location.

Autism Speaker Series

David Finch is a humorist and author of the acclaimed New York Times bestselling memoir, The Journal of Best Practices. Married in 2003 and diagnosed years later with Asperger syndrome, David has committed himself to relentless self-improvement, sometimes to a comical extent. A former semiconductor engineer turned full-time writer and speaker, David has written for The New York Times, Huffington Post, and Slate, and he writes a relationship blog for Psychology Today. But his greatest accomplishment by far has been learning how to thrive as a family man. At the podium, David brings his story to life through narrative that both inspires and entertains. With a comedian's wit, affecting storytelling, a long list of endearing quirks, and surprising wisdom, David shares his journey from the world's most trying husband to the husband who tries the most-a journey that taught him how to live a successful, fulling life, and even how to fold laundry without being asked. His messages range from the transformative power of love, understanding, guidance, and adaptability in any relationship, to living a fulling life with an autism spectrum condition, to thriving in what he describes as a "neurologically-mixed marriage." While sharing hilarious and moving anecdotes from his life, David provides his audiences with invaluable, fresh insights into their own. Rich with wisdom and life-changing lessons for anyone motivated to succeed-be it in their career, their marriage, or any aspect of their life-David's talks lend a message of hope and inspiration from which anyone can benefit.

Changes Coming to SNAP Availability Dates

TALLAHASSEE - Starting in March 2016, Florida's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be making a change. Currently SNAP benefits are deposited on Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards over a 15 day period. The new schedule will spread out the deposits over a 28 day period. All dates are assigned based on the customer's case number. In March, most SNAP benefits will be split into two EBT deposits to assist with adjustment to the new dates. Customers will receive half of their benefits on the current date, and the other half on the new date. In April, and each month after that, customers will receive their full benefits on the new date. Monthly deposit totals will not be affected because of this change. The schedule is changing to 28 days so grocery stores can spread out food inventory better during the month to help keep commonly purchased items available to their customers. The Florida Department of Children and Families determines eligibility for food assistance based on federal requirements. More details on the new SNAP dates are available online at
