Teaching "Hands Only CPR" can save many lives by filling our community with people who are trained to give sudden cardiac arrest victims the immediate help they need to survive until professional medical help arrives. The Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades invites you to join us for the Grand Opening of the fine art exhibit entitled:
ARTCALUSA: Reflections on Representation
ARTCALUSA is a group exhibition featuring Florida's leading historical artists working today, each of whom produces works of art based on scholarly research findings and experimental approaches in archaeology and history. ARTCALUSA visually interprets the life and experiences of Florida's indigenous peoples, particularly the Calusa Indians through their contact with early European explorers. The exhibition also details through artwork and text the dramatic changes in Florida's environment since people first moved to Florida over 12,000 years ago. Paintings, works on paper, and etched glass by eight artists will be exhibited from January 28th to May 22nd. Exhibiting artists include Lucas Century, Merald Clark, Charles Dauray, David Meo, Theodore Morris, Dean Quigley, Hermann Trappman, and Jackson Walker. The exhibition is co-curated by Theresa Schober and Barbara Anderson Hill and organized by Lee Trust for Historic Preservation. The exhibition is locally sponsored by the Glades Historical Society.

Lecture: "the Deadly 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane in the Glades"
Killer 'Cane takes place in the Florida Everglades, which was still a newly settled frontier in the 1920s. On the night of September 16, 1928, a hurricane swung up from Puerto Rico and collided, quite unexpectedly, with Palm Beach. The powerful winds from the storm burst a dike and sent a twenty-foot wall of water through three towns, killing over two thousand people, a third of the area's population. Robert Mykle shows how the residents of the Everglades had believed prematurely that they had tamed nature, how racial attitudes at the time compounded the disaster, and how in the aftermath the cleanup of rapidly decaying corpses was such a horrifying task that some workers went mad. Killer 'Cane is a vivid description of
America's second-greatest natural disaster, coming between the financial disasters of the Florida real-estate
bust and the onset of the Great Depression.

The Improvised Shakespeare Company at Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center!
The Improvised Shakespeare Company (ISC) is returning to the Dolly Hand on Tuesday, February 16! Based on one audience suggestion (a title for a play that has yet to be written) The Improvised Shakespeare Co. creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the playershas brushed up on his "thee's" and "thou's" to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we've come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. The night could reveal a tragedy, comedy, or history. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed, or written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new!
Founded in 2005, the troupe has been performing its critically-acclaimed show every Friday night at the world famous iO Theater in Chicago for over nine years and continues to entertain audiences around the globe with its touring company. The ISC has been featured at the Piccolo Spoleto Fringe Festival, Off Broadway in New York City, the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival, UCB's Del Close Marathon, and the prestigious Just For Laughs festival in Montreal and Chicago. It has been named Chicago's best improv group by both the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Examiner and has received a New York Nightlife Award for "Best Comedic Performance by a Group". The ISC was recently honored by the Chicago Improv Foundation as its "Ensemble of the Year". To offer a bit of background (and to over-simplify a bit) there are two basic schools of thought about how to train cultural competence: (1) Teach staff in healthcare and human services what certain groups (e.g., Hispanics or Arabs/Muslims) are like so that we can "serve them better"; or (2) Teach staff universally effective communication skills focused on uncovering what each culturally unique individual thinks of the health condition or problem that brought that person in. Many of us know that option (1) actually teaches stereotypes and causes more problems than it solves. This article shows you that result in ways that can smack you between the eyes.
Scholarship Opportunity Through the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Foundation
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Foundation (PBCSF) is pleased to announce the availability of its Youth Scholarship Program for deserving high school seniors in Palm Beach County who have been nominated by a sworn employee of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
There is a total of $40,000 in scholarships, and each scholarship is renewable for up to four years provided the student reapplies each year and maintains a 3.0 GPA. Scholarships awarded are between $1,000 and $3,000 per year. Trade schools are eligible. Applications should be emailed as one packet to Steve.Moss@pbcsf.org The deadline for all submissions is Feb. 1.

Palm Beach County Youth Services Department is accepting vendor applications for the Summer Camp Scholarship Program. Camps must apply to participate in the 2016 Summer Camp Scholarship Program. The program provides full-tuition and fees for summer camp for children residing in families with income at or below 150% of Federal Poverty Guidelines. It allows parents to work with the knowledge that their children are safe and gives children educational and recreational opportunities for growth. Parents may choose from participating camps in Palm Beach County.

Beginning Jan. 4, 2016, CareerSource Palm Beach County is required to implement the SNAP
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Employment & Training program for participants who
are classified as able-bodied adults without dependents in Palm Beach County.
Participants who are able-bodied adults without dependents in this classification are between 18 and 49 years old, work less than 30 hours a week with wages below $217.50 per week, not attending school and without medical limitations. There are 18,057 participants in this category in Palm Beach County.
"To continue receiving SNAP (food stamp) benefits in Florida after Jan. 1, these participants must complete a registration process and comply with an 80 hours/month (20 hours/week) work program,"said Dina Hill, Director of Client Services.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity will send letters to participants to notify them of these requirements. Once they have completed registration along with an online orientation, assessment and job search training, they will receive an appointment letter to meet with a career consultant at any of two SNAP Employment & Training office locations - in West Palm Beach at 1764 North Congress Avenue, Suite 204; and in Belle Glade at 1085 South Main Street. The Florida Department of Children and Families will be responsible for approving or denying benefits, including determining exemptions for "good cause," meeting/not meeting work requirements, exemptions from work requirements and determining unfitness for work claims. "It's important for participants to know that CareerSource is not responsible for approving or denying food stamp benefits. Our responsibility is to ensure that all participants referred to us are in compliance with the work program requirement, as well as tracking and reporting," said Ms. Hill. "The objective is to help participants gain skills, training and/or work experience that will increase their ability to move directly into employment."

The Palm Beach Post is now accepting applications for the 2016 Minority Scholarship Program in Journalism. This program was established to help identify and assist minority students journalists in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. For this program, minority is defined as Alaskan Native, Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American or Pacific Islander. The purpose is to provide financial support and practical experience for these students. The application deadline is March 18, 2016.
This scholarship is separate from the Pathfinder Scholarship Program, although winners will be recognized during the awards ceremony on May 10, 2016. Eligible Pathfinder Nominees may also apply for the Minority Scholarship Program in Journalism.

For almost 10 years, Nonprofits First has proudly welcomed a class of future nonprofit leaders to our Rising Leaders program. Through service learning projects, submitted by our community partners, they are providing these Rising Leaders with opportunities to work collaboratively with organizations and professionals throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties...it has been a great benefit for them and the organizations they serve.
From February through May, a group of 5 to 6 members of the Rising Leaders program participants will dedicate time to addressing a challenge your organization currently faces. Final projects will be presented to you and fellow class members at the conclusion of Rising Leaders 2015-2016 in June. Their 2015-2016 Rising Leaders class has been selected and Nonprofits First is currently accepting proposals for service learning projects through January 13, 2016.

The Barbara Bush Foundation's Early Learning Summit
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy will host a special event focused on early learning. Residential Rehabilitation Program - City of West Palm Beach
The City of West Palm Beach announces the availability of approximately $475,000 in funding from federal
and state grants allocated to the Cit y to address owner occupied residential repair needs for low to moderate income households. This limited funding is made available through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP). In addition, the City of West Palm Beach will make available approximately $50,000 in SHIP Program funds for the Housing Stabilization Program.
RESIDENTIAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM: The Residential Rehabilitation Program is designed to provide financial assistance to homeowners to address repair items that compromise the life, health, and/or safety of the household. Assistance is in the form of a 0% interest, deferred payment loan up to $50,000. Households must meet gross annual incomes not exceeding 80% Area Median Income limits established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the jurisdiction of Palm Beach, FL. The applicable low-income limits for determining program eligibility are published by HUD in the federal register and are updated annually.
