A total of 19 residents established a medical home at the event and received medical care. In addition, 15 follow-up appointments were made. Certified Application Counselors with the Brumback Clinics helped 16 residents enroll in health coverage plans. Spanish and Creole interpreters, trained by the Glades Initiative, were on hand to assist non-English speaking residents. All residents receiving medical services received a hygiene bag.100 were prepared. Each bag included a large size bath towel, wash cloth, full size shampoo, deodorant, comb, toothpaste, toothbrush, and soap in a reusable tote bag. Leftover bags were donated to the Lighthouse Caf� to be distributed to the homeless.
The Glades Initiative completed 113 ADA Diabetes Risk Assessment's at both events as well as breast health education - navigation. Of the 113 screenings, 45 or 40% showed increased risk for type 2 diabetes and strongly encouraged to seek medical attention at the health fair or schedule an appointment. Of the 30 residents educated on breast health, 1 was identified as uninsured and in need of a mammogram. This resident was referred for a free mammogram at Lakeside Medical Center through a program offered by Komen South Florida.
Food supplies donated by Feeding South Florida were distributed at both locations. A total of 8,880 lbs. of food was distributed to the needy residents attending the health fair at both locations.

The Glades Initiative's Annual United Way Campaign
For our workplace campaign to support the United Way of Palm Beach County, The Glades Initiative invites you to participate in our 50/50 prize drawing. 50% of the total collected will go to the owner of the ticket selected. The ticket selection will take place at our Annual Thanksgiving Potluck on November 20, and 50% of the total collected will be donated to The United Way of Palm Beach County. On Thursday, November 12, the Human Services Coalition and Nonprofit Chamber of Palm Beach County will present the legislative Green Books containing our legislative priorities in the areas of health, disabilities, elder issues, children and youth, substance abuse/mental health and children and youth to our legislators. It is important that as many health and human services providers as possible attend so that our delegation can see the extent of our unity and consensus.
The priorities were set through a consensus process in which many of you submitted priorities and helped select two in each area of concern as the top priorities. The remainder of the priorities will also be included.
Our legislators take these books to Tallahassee and refer to them often, especially when you visit them or contact them regarding issues important to Palm Beach County providers and their clients.

It's that time of year again to schedule volunteers for the South Florida Fair! I know you support our organization's endeavors so I am hoping you will be willing to volunteer some of your time to hand out drowning prevention and water safety information. You receive free entry, shirt, and the satisfaction of promoting this life safety issue! If you volunteer for more than 5 shifts you will receive a picture ID which pretty much allows you to come and go to the Fair as you please.
We have 17 days that we need to cover our booth and need 3 people per shift. This year we are hoping to break our record of obtaining 3,500 pool safely pledges. The Drowning Prevention Coalition is nothing without its volunteers. So please, help us promote our mission! Are you an aspiring nonprofit leader who is ready for the next level of personal and professional growth? If so, consider applying for Nonprofit First's Rising Leaders program. Nonprofits First is now accepting applications for the 2016 Rising Leaders program, which is sponsored in part by the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County.
Launched in 2005, the 6-month program teaches emerging nonprofit leaders effective strategies to handle major leadership and organizational challenges. Through lectures, discussions, group exercises and other activities, participants interact, discover, communicate, and serve as they build their skills to become leaders in the nonprofit sector.
The class begins in January 2016 and runs through May 2016 with graduation in June.

The Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades invites visitors of all ages to view our current exhibit "People of the Water" which features artifacts from and interpretive displays about the Belle Glade Archaeological Culture of the Pre-Columbian Glades area. Please share this with as many parents as possible. The Palm Beach County ESE Advisory Council and School District's ESE Department invite parents to attend this year's Fall Parent Forum. The topic covered at this forum, Self-Determination, is meant to help parents facilitate children with disabilities "to undertake a measure of control in their lives, helping to set and steer the course rather than remaining the silent passenger."
