Many of our Glades residents are uninsured or underinsured and do not have a "Medical Home". Residents lacking a medical home do notreceive consistent, preventative medical care, and only visit the hospital emergency room after they are in more serious medical need - a more costly alternative for the individual and the larger system of care.
We are currently planning our 14th Annual Glades REACH health fair, to be held October 24, 2015 with a goal of encouraging uninsured/underinsured residents to establish a medical home. The fair will be held simultaneously at the C.L. Brumback Primary Care Clinic in Belle Glade and Florida Community Health Center in Pahokee , (both Federally Qualified Health Centers FQHCs), as we want residents to visit the actual facility that will become their medical home, where they can receive consistent, comprehensive, preventative medical care.
WHEN: Monday, October 19, 2015 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: The Glades Initiative, Inc., 141 SE Avenue C, Belle Glade

The Knight Cities Challenge is open for applications from October 1-27 asking people to submit ideas that address the question: What's your best idea to make cities more successful? The challenge is offering a share of $5 million for new ideas to make the 26 communities where Knight invests (including Palm Beach County!) more vibrant places to live and work.
The Knight Foundation is hoping to attract a broad range of ideas from: neighbors, architects, activists, artists, city planners, entrepreneurs, students, educators, city officials, as well as governments and organizations. The challenge has just two rules:
The project must take place in or benefit one or more of 26 Knight communities. to include Palm Beach County!
The idea should focus on one or more of three key drivers of city success:
Talent: Ideas that help cities attract and keep talent
Opportunity: Ideas that create economic prospects by breaking down divides & making new connections
Engagement: Ideas that spur connection and civic involvement
Applying to the Knight Cities Challenge is easy. Tell them how you would use a share of $5 million to help a city attract talent, expand economic opportunity, or create a culture of civic engagement. No project is too small as long as your idea is big.

Take Stock in Children is a non-profit college scholarship and mentoring organization. They have 60 male or female freshman at Glades Central High School that have been awarded a college scholarship. However, to remain in our program, as one of the requirements, they must be assigned a mentor. Their mentors are a key component to the success of our program. Our students are selected in grades 6th - 9th and are provided a College Readiness Coach to meet with them each 8 weeks, a volunteer mentor who meets with them during lunch 1 day/week and a Florida Prepaid Tuition Scholarship. The students must maintain their GPA, meet with their mentor, attend 2 student workshops/year and remain crime and drug free.
Their goal is for all of our students to graduate high school, be college ready and remain in college. All mentors will be required to complete a mentor application and attend a mentor training before you can begin mentoring. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to change the lives of these students.
