14th Annual REACH Health Fair Planning MeetingREACHlogo
REACHPlanningMeeting
Many of our Glades residents are uninsured or underinsured and do not have a "Medical Home".  Residents lacking a medical home do not receive consistent, preventative medical care, and only visit the hospital emergency room after they are in more serious medical need - a more costly alternative for the individual and the larger system of care.

We are currently planning our 14th Annual Glades REACH health fair, to be held October 24, 2015 with a goal of encouraging uninsured/underinsured residents to establish a medical home.  The fair will be held simultaneously at the C.L. Brumback Primary Care Clinic in Belle Glade and Florida Community Health Center in Pahokee , (both Federally Qualified Health Centers FQHCs), as we want residents to visit the actual facility that will become their medical home, where they can receive consistent, comprehensive,  preventative medical care.

Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach and Lawrence E Will Museum Introduce Glades Academy Students to Local Historic Buildings

On October 5th, Preservation Foundation Associate Educator, Lynne Charter and Lawrence E. Will Museum curator, Linda Geary will introduce fourth-grade students from Glades Academy in Pahokee to historic buildings in their community.  The field trip will incorporate architecture and history. It is designed to encourage students' appreciation of the area's past and to impart a sense of pride of place in their community. Students will explore five local structures in the Pahokee/Belle Glade area.  Each building's owner will provide a tour explaining the history, past and present uses, and architectural style.  Many of the buildings are currently undergoing restorations that showcase and honor their past purpose and architectural design.

In preparation for the field trip, students learned about the importance of historic preservation and the architectural styles of the buildings they will tour.  The featured styles, popular from the 1920's to the 1940's, are Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Masonry Vernacular.  Students also received several hours of photographic instruction, providing them the opportunity to capture unique pictures that tell a story about each building.
