Women on the Run ~ Nominate A Women Today!

The Women's Foundation of Palm Beach County needs your help to identify women leaders who should run for office.  They are holding a non-partisan training on September 26 to empower women with the skills to run for elected office.  If you know a woman you think should get ready to run, please share the attached training flyer with them and please

Women can register on their own, but research shows women need to be encourage and asked to run several times.  If you nominate them using this link the Women's Foundation will email them and call them letting them know they have been nominated and we want them to attend.

Women on the Run is a year-long interactive training and mentoring program for women interested in running for office or serving in a leadership role of a community organization. The program starts with a one-day training with our partner Wellstone Action, a premier center for political leadership development.  Participants in the training on September 26th will gain:
  •       "How to" plans on running for office
  •       Fundraising and communications skills
  •       Real-world advice and best practices from experts
  •       Strategies for positioning oneself for public leadership
  •       Inspiration to launch a campaign
In addition, Women on the Run moves beyond the traditional campaign training by providing ongoing support.  All participants will be assigned an elected official who will serve as a mentor and receive a Women on the Run Leadership Circle membership.  Intimate support circles will meet each quarter for the next year with an elected official to continue their training and provide a network of other women running for office.

Research shows that increasing women in elected office can make government more transparent and inclusive. The Women's Foundation is committed to engaging a critical mass of women to run simultaneously to change the way government works. We invite you to join this non-partisan movement to ensure women are visible, valued and heard in Palm Beach County.

We also welcome your support as a partner and sponsor.  If you want to get more involved, please review the attached 2015 Women on the Run sponsorship information.

You can learn more about WFPBC on our website www.WomensFoundationPBC.org.  If you have any further questions please contact us at 561-909-8415 or email [email protected]

Department of Labor ~ Changes in Independent Contractor Classification
Big changes in how the Department of Labor defines "Independent Contractors" has take effect as of July 15, 2015.
The DOL is using a very broad definition of employee based on the "economic realities" of the relationship. In applying the economic realities factors, courts have described independent contractors as those workers with economic independence who are operating a business of their own.
On the other hand, workers who are economically dependent on the employer, regardless of skill level, are employees covered by the FLSA.  In other words, they will examine whether the worker is really in business for him or herself (and thus is an independent contractor) or is economically dependent on the employer (and thus is its employee). The IRS does not follow the same rules as the DOL, where they focus primarily on the employer control of the individual, which are summarized in the old 20 Factor Test.  An individual is an employee if not an independent contractor if  they perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done). This applies even if the individual is given freedom of action.  What matters is that the employer has the legal right to control the details of how the services are performed. Keep in mind that both the DOL and IRS agree that misclassification as independent contractors is common and a top enforcement priority. Because the rules have changed, you should review all independent contractor classifications in light of this new guidance.

Department of Labor Updated FMLA Forms

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issues forms for employers to use in the administration of Family Medical (FMLA) leave. On the heels of the old forms expiring earlier this year, the DOL has issued new forms. In addition to a new expiration date, the new forms also include specific references to the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which limits collection of data on hereditary health conditions that could be used to discriminate against employees, and recent regulations related to military service leave.

If you use the DOL's forms (which are strongly recommended by Legal Aid Society), check the expiration date in the upper right-hand corner.

The new forms, which can be found on the DOL's website at www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/2013rule/militaryforms.htm, will bear an expiration date of May 31, 2018. If you don't use the DOL's forms, review your forms to ensure that they comply with both GINA and recent FMLA developments.

Fate of Uber in Palm Beach County to be determined August 18

Citizens For Improved Transit supports Uber as a transportation option that has significant positive impacts on the lives of county residents and benefits the local economy. On August 18th at 9:30 a.m., the Palm Beach Board of County Commissioners will vote on an ordinance that will determine if Uber will be able to continue operating in Palm Beach County.
Citizens For Improved Transit's recommendation: Uber should be allowed to continue to operate without additional restrictions. It has a proven track record of safe service that benefits the community without using any tax dollars. If at anytime in the future the background checks Uber performs are found to be insufficient the County Commissioners can require increased background checks to continue operations in the county. Uber is an asset to Palm Beach County and should be allowed to continue serve its residents.
The Board of County Commissioners will be voting if to allow Uber to continue to operate in Palm Beach County on Tuesday, August 18th. The meeting is open to the public:
WHEN:  Tuesday, August 18, 2015  9:30 a.m.
WHERE:  6th floor, 301 North Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach
If you have an opinion on Uber you can speak for up to 2 minutes in front of the county commissioners at the meeting. It is required you fill out a card to speak when you arrive before discussions on the topic starts.
Send an email to [email protected] and all the P.B.C. commissioners will receive your email.
Emails should be sent no later than Monday August 17th.

If you have not tried Uber, use the code "UBER-PBC" and your first trip up to $20 will be free.  Uber rides cost approximately 60% less than a traditional taxi ride. A $30 taxi trip would cost $12 using Uber. A fare estimate can be seen before requesting a trip after inputting the starting location and ending destination.

Free Behavioral Health Screening for Back to School

Back to school health exams for children are well underway at many area health clinics and pediatrician's offices. But is your child getting the most complete care possible? MHAPBC is working with 15 local doctor's offices to provide simple well-child screenings for depression and anxiety as part of the regular exams needed for back to school. One of the most significant predictors of problems in school is unidentified depression and anxiety and between 15 and 20% of children have these conditions and are undiagnosed. We are working with local pediatricians, community centers, and after-school programs to ensure that children get the complete health care - including a 'check-up from the neck up'!

If you are a parent, service provider, pediatrician or caregiver and would like to know more about this free mental health screening program, please contact us on our NEW Mental Health GPS Helpline -- 561.801.HELP (4357). Call if you would like a free screening or just want to talk about mental health care and resources in our community. 561.801.4357
