Florida Health PBC Offers Free Hepatitis Testing
The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County is recognizing National Hepatitis Testing Day , Tuesday, May 19,, 2015 by offering free testing at its Northeast Clinic, 851 Avenue P, Riviera Beach. Those born between 1945 and 1965 have a higher risk for Hepatitis C and millions every year contract liver cancer as a result. All are encouraged to be tested at least once.
"Now is a good time for people to increase their awareness and understanding of hepatitis and the diseases, like liver cancer, that it causes," said Department of Health in Palm Beach County Director Alina Alonso, MD. Any person, no matter their age, gender, race or ethnicity, can get the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there are between four and 5 million Americans and more than 300,000 Floridians with chronic hepatitis C (HCV). Florida Department of Health data shows that there are over 120,000 baby boomers in Florida who are currently infected with HCV. About two-thirds to three-fourths of people living with HCV do not know they are infected.
The hepatitis C recommendations propose that all U.S. baby boomers, the generation born between1945 and 1965, get a one-time blood test to determine if they are infected with hepatitis C. At the Northeast Clinic from 10 AM -4:30 PM, Florida Health Palm Beach County Disease Intervention Specialist will be offering free hepatitis tests.
Hepatitis C is spread through contact with blood containing the virus. It is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States. Sharing a needle while injecting illegal drugs is the biggest risk factor for becoming infected with hepatitis C. Another risk factor is a previous blood
transfusion.

Webinar Series: Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, and Sexual Assault
The prevalence of human trafficking across the country is widespread-spanning small, rural jurisdictions to sprawling cities-and affects both domestic and foreign-born children and adults. Because of the coercive and violent nature of human trafficking, it is common for victims to experience overlapping forms of victimization, particularly domestic violence and sexual assault. Yet, many survivors are unrecognized, criminalized, or do not receive adequate services to address their complex needs. How can multidisciplinary groups work together to identify survivors and direct them to services? How can key stakeholders enhance their capacity and collaboration to meet survivors' needs?
This five-part webinar series offers strategies, practical tips, case studies, and resources to help domestic violence and sexual assault service providers improve outcomes for human trafficking survivors. Each webinar highlights models for potential replication and features local and national subject matter experts.
