Free, informal class lets non-native English speakers practice conversation skills
"I'm in English conversation class and it is a wonderful class because I'm improving my pronunciation, vocabulary and express [ions] a lot. That is important in this country," wrote Gladys Munoz. Munoz is one of many adults who have been participating in the Palm Beach County Library System's English Exchange Program, an informal class where non-native English speakers can practice their conversational skills in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The class encourages English language learners to improve their pronunciation and vocabulary skills, while meeting new friends and sharing time with others who also want to better their English.
Adults have been taking advantage of this free class throughout Palm Beach County's coastal communities for several years, but now Glades-area adults can practice their English language skills beginning Sept. 11, when the program comes to the Belle Glade Branch Library. Genaro Mendez, who participates in the English Exchange program on the coast, spoke of the importance of learning English and how the class has helped him in his language-learning endeavors. "We decide who we are. We are not predetermined. These are some thoughts that have been bouncing in my head. I believe that coming to this class allows us to become better in all aspects of our lives. It allows us to encounter our fears. It allows us to start believing in ourselves. And most of all to love this language more. Many of us tell ourselves, 'I'm going back to my country,' but the reality is that many of us will not. Never stop seeking the opportunities to grow. Coming to this class is the beginning," he wrote. Anyone interested in participating in the program should reserve a seat by calling Belle Glade Library Participants should also have basic English skills.
