Free Assistance with Enrollment to Medicaid, SNAP, and other services in Spanish & Creole
Community Resource Educators, Yasmin Gama, and Marie Jean Jacque

The Glades Initiative's two Community Resource Educators, who are bi-lingual in Spanish and Haitian Creole, assist families with limited English, low literacy, and limited or no access to computers to enroll in services such as SNAP and Medicaid using the One-E-App system. One-e-App is an innovative web-based system that provides an efficient one-stop approach to enrollment for these services.

Using formulas developed by the Administrators of One-E-App and DCF, this past year alone, The Glades Initiative our clients in accessing services valuing $3,193,176.00.  In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, our two Community Resource Educators were responsible for accessing $1,067,105 of SNAP benefits for our clients - increasing their access to nutritious food. This translates to $1,963,473.20 in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) generated by the $1,067,105 in Food Stamps benefits. (USDA calculates each Food Stamp dollar generates GDP @ $1.84 = $1,963,473.20).

In the same fiscal year, our two Educators assisted 1694 residents to enroll in Medicaid. Their efforts to bring these federal benefits into our community help not only the low income and food insecure children and families receiving the benefits, but help significantly in the economic stimulation of our community.  To make an appointment for enrollment assistance with Medicaid, SNAP, and other services, call The Glades Initiative at 561-996-3310.

Our Educators engage in outreach at many locations throughout our community in order to reach residents who may be eligible for Medicaid, SNAP, and other services but not receiving them.  They attend churches, food pantries, health fairs and can present to residents in both English and Creole about the services we provide.  If you would like us to come speak at your group or facility, please call Karis Engle at 561-996-3310 or email kengle@gladesinitiative.org.

Free Mammograms for those who Qualify at Lakeside Medical Center

Don't allow money to keep you from getting a mammogram, and potentially saving your life.  You may qualify for a FREE mammogram at Lakeside Medical Center through a grant from Susan G Komen South Florida.

Annual mammograms can detect cancer early - when it is most treatable.  In fact, mammograms show changes in the breast up to two years before you or a physician can feel them.  Mammograms can also prevent the need for extensive treatment for advanced cancers and improve the chances of breast conservation.  Current guidelines recommend that women receive annual mammograms starting at age 40 - even if they have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer.

To see if you qualify for a free mammogram and to make an appointment, call Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade at 561-996-6571 ext. 8286

Community Impact Spotlight: Choir Coming to the Glades

Community Impact grants from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties are made possible by some of their generous fund holders. These grants are available through an open and competitive application process. Their Board recently approved more than $2.7 million in Community Impact grants this year to nonprofits working in the areas of affordable housing, arts and culture, the environment and hunger.

One of these grants was awarded to the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches to fund a new program called "Choir in the Glades." The grant will support the formation of a satellite program in the Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay region, offering the children of The Glades access to choral music education and training. Young Singers is an 11-year-old community organization comprised of 350 Palm Beach County children from 2nd grade through high school.  Based at the Kravis Center, the nonprofit draws children from all over Palm Beach County, however the great distance between the two ends of the county has always presented transportation and time obstacles for children living in the Glades areas. This program will unite the community in a unique way. The three-year grant is provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund of the Community Foundation.

Stay tuned to the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches website for more information about the Choir in the Glades.  http://www.yspb.org/home

Bringing, CIRCLES - A national movement to the TRI-CITY Area

Today, nearly 50.4 million Americans - including 22% of our nation's children (16M) - live in poverty. In Palm Beach County the poverty rate is 14%, but in the Circles target areas the rates are much higher: Riviera Beach (25.4%), Pahokee (26.7%), Belle Glade (35.1%) and Boynton Beach (16.2). Majority of our community suffers needlessly trying to meet their basic needs in a community that has ample amount of resources and opportunities.  If our mindset could shift from our denial and confusion about poverty to clarify about ending it, the abundant resources and opportunities of this community would flow into solutions that would rapidly eliminate poverty for our low income families. More rapidly than any of us could even imagine.

Bridges of Pahokee has partnered with Pathways to Prosperity to coordinate a program focused on helping families transition out of poverty, called Circles. Circles is an initiative that believes every member of the community has gifts and strengths to share with one another. It offers the participants the opportunity to identify their own strengths in order to improve their lives and help build the community around them. Families that are working their way out of poverty (Circles Leaders) and community volunteers (Ally's) will build relationships with each other in an effort to break down isolation, keep children safe, educate the community about how to reduce poverty, and achieve self-sufficiency and economic stability. Our most important requirement is that:

The Circle Leader commits to:

  • Completing Circles orientation
  • Completing 18-20 week Circles poverty training
  • Attending Weekly Community Meetings that include dinner and youth programming with other Circle Leaders and Allies (contact the Circles Coach when you are unable to attend)
  • Making progress toward the goals you identify
  • Meeting monthly with your circle to build relationships, brainstorm action steps, and document your progress

The Circle Ally commits to:

1.       6-12 hours per month

2.        Being a Circle ally for 18 months

3.       After you are matched with the Circle, you will have:

a.      one monthly meeting with the Circle at a mutually convenient time

b.      one monthly Community meeting with other Circles and the staff to discuss

Circle progress, systems barriers, and other pertinent items to the Circle

c.       an optional regularly scheduled ally support meeting

d.      phone and in-person contact as needed throughout the month

If you are interested in participating in Circles to make not only a life style change but a community impact, please don't hesitate to call me, Charquanza Felton @ 561-924-9224

NonProfit Legal Assistance Project Newsletter: Significant Changes to Florida's Data Breach Law

The Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 1524, or the Florida Information Protection Act of 2014, on April 30, 2014, and was signed by the governor. The new law takes effect July 1, 2014, and will impose stringent new requirements on numerous Florida businesses that handle personal information. According to the Florida Office of the Attorney General (AG), the purpose of the bill is to better protect the confidential personal information of Floridians and hold accountable those who attempt to breach the security of that information, although many of the new penalties will significantly affect organizations who experience a breach.  In addition, this new law will have a significant impact on Florida health care providers and health plans. This new Bill will replace the existing statute in Florida.

Summer Safety Tips - Water Safety

The state loses more children under the age of five to drowning than any other state in the nation. As we play in the summer sun, it is important to emphasize supervision and swim safety while spending time with friends and family around the pool.  There are many layers of protection that can prevent drowning deaths:

  • Supervision: Someone should always be actively watching children when they are in the pool. This means don't play around on your phone or get involved in a big conversation while watching the kids. Drowning can happen in just a few minutes. Designate a "Water Watcher" to keep an eye on swimmers.
  • Barriers: A child should never be able to enter the pool area unaccompanied by an adult. Barriers physically block a child from the pool. Barriers include: child-proof locks on all doors, a pool fence with self-latching and self-closing gates, as well as door and pool alarms. Pool covers may also be used but make sure it is a professional cover fitted for your pool. A simple canvas covering can be a drowning hazard and entrap a child in the water. Florida law requires barriers for home pools.

Summer Break Spots in the Glades

Summer Break Spots or the Summer Food Service Programs are federally funded by the USDA and is state-administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Children need healthy food all year long in order to grow and learn.  During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-priced meals through the School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.  When school lets out for the summer, many of these children are at risk of hunger or poor nutrition.  This program is designed to ensure that children have access to the nutritious meals they need to grow, learn and play during the summer months and to help ensure their bodies and minds are healthy and strong for the upcoming school year.

There is no cost for meals.  USDA requires that meals be served at no charge to the children.  However, the site may have a fee set for the activity program they provide.

At almost all sites, there is no application necessary and any child 18 or younger can simply come during meal times to receive a meal.

However, we do suggest that you give them a call first to let the site know that your child may be coming during meal time. Some sites ask that an adult or responsible teen accompany children during the meal time because they don't have staff to handle extra children that may not be a part of their regular activity program. Exception: A few sites (like overnight camps and sites in higher income areas) do require that parents fill out a form about family income in order for children to receive meals.
