Glades Initiative's first Cooking Matters Nutrition Education Course was held on March 5, 2014 at the Pahokee Recreation Center for Spanish speaking clients of the Bridges of Pahokee.

Alzheimer's Community Care Introduces their New Family Nurse Consultant to the Glades
 Alzheimer's Community Care is proud to introduce Danielle Adair, RN Family Nurse Consultant for the Glades! The Family Nurse Consultantprovides vital services to families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease or related neurocognitive disorders. Alzheimer's Community Care focuses on understanding patients' behaviors, anticipating issues, developing crisis prevention strategies by proactively managing emerging issues from stage to stage in the disease process and providing respite for the caregiver. The Family Nurse Consultant's primary role is to provide potential interventions, available resources, possible measures and outcomes at key stages in the disease's progression. Family Nurse Consultant's are skilled, trained, educated, and experienced with families living with Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders. Anticipating more than 1,000 health fair visitors, HANOA is putting out a call for medical and other health care professionals to volunteer.
During the free day-long event, medical and health care professionals will provide information about nutrition, diet and exercise, childhood obesity, HIV/AIDS, mental health and common chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disorders, depression, dementia, breast cancer and more. The fair also will offer complimentary health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and mammography.

Managing Chronic Pain, Anxiety and Depression Through Cognitive Restructuring: a Practical Approach
MHAPBC welcomes the return to West Palm Beach one of our favorite presenters: Dr. Ellen Slawsby of The Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Slawsby is one of the nation's leading experts on mind body wellness and during this Lunch and Learn, we will learn to improve our lives using mind body techniques and cognitive restructuring to help manage chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. Cognitive Restructuring enhances ones ability to identify and analyze negative automatic or disturbing thoughts that can become overwhelming for an individual. Once we learn to identify negative automatic thoughts cognitive, restructuring helps us reframe and balance our thoughts with more accurate thoughts, which in turn helps us to cope in a more effective and useful manner with the presenting stressor.
Please come prepared to participate, ask questions and present a case for a hands-on practical workshop with a special emphasis on cognitive restructuring. We will be using real examples of negative automatic thoughts that have been difficult for you and/or your patients to manage; thoughts that exacerbate anxiety, depression and feeling of disempowerment.

A series of Town Hall Meetings is being held between January and March 2014 both in person and through social media, millennials speak up for change and reform in Palm Beach County, Florida. We are holding town hall meetings in all regions of the county: South, Central, North, and Belle Glade. The goal is to seek insights and solutions from Palm Beach County citizens that will lead to the prevention of people with mental illness from entering the legal system. Young people, business leaders, and policymakers will talk about mental illness, find community-based solutions, create an action plan with clear steps that will prevent people with mental illness from needlessly entering the legal system.

Building communities from Inside Out: A Path Toward Mobilizing Citizens for Action
For Neighborhood Residents, Community Organizers, and Nonprofit Leaders
Join internationally recognized community-building leaders John McKnight and Mike Green for an engaging and interactive learning event focused on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles and applying them to discovering and mobilizing the resources that are already present in your community.
Building communities from Inside Out: A Path Toward Mobilizing Citizens for Action is a two-day learning experience that familiarizes participants with the basic concepts of Asset-Based Community Development. Participants will learn the skills to define the capacity of their current organizational environment to create community change; envision their own ability to act within that envi¬ronment; and will create an action plan to engage their community.

- People seeking to develop more connected, inclu¬sive and engaged local communities;
- Community organizing, community builders and resident service staff from nonprofit organiza¬tions;

Palm Beach County Office of Equal Opportunity's 2014 Fair Housing Law Update and Accessibility Training Program
This half-day training will be two separate tracks- The Fair Housing Law Update is designed for attorneys, judges, realtors, condo/homeowner association officers and fair housing professionals. This training features Tara K. Ramchandani, Esq. of the nationally recognized civil rights law firm of Relman, Dane & Colfax, PLLC, Washington, D.C., Ms. Ramchandani is known for her litigation of fair housing cases. She obtained a $1 million jury verdict in Florida in a case alleging housing discrimination against families with children in Whyte, et al. v. Alston Management, et al. Additionally, Isabel Torres-Davis of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will focus her presentation on Requests for a Reasonable Accommodation and the HOT topic of Emotional Support Animals!! The Accessibility Training is designed for Architects, Engineers, Developers and Builders, Code Enforcement Officials for county and municipalities, disability advocates and others interested in learning more about the requirements of Florida's Accessibility Code and the requirements of the ADA and Fair Housing Act. Palm Beach Victims' Rights Coalition Invites You to Participate in their "We Care" Campaign
for Victims' Rights Week 2014 (April 6 - 12th, 2014) The Palm Beach Victims' Rights Coalition is seeking the compassion of community members, schools, churches, agencies, non-profits and businesses to extend the following support to victims of crime:
- Write letters of comfort and encouragement.
- Create encouraging posters, artwork or other crafts.
- Donate discount coupons and/or goods to help individuals and families struggling during crisis.During Victims' Rights Week, our Coalition members will be interfacing with victims across the advocacy spectrum and will deliver these items as a surprise, demonstrating the compassionate care and concern of others.
We hope you will consider this as a personal or community project. Please email us at PBVRC@pbvrc.org if you are interested in participating in this wonderful opportunity to help others heal during a tremendously difficult period, and to make arrangements for a pick-up.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Are you a parent or a teacher with concerns about a child's or student's behavior? 1 out of 12 children have a diagnosable mental illness. Mental illness are progressive disease. Early intervention and treatment can help prevent these treatable disease from progressing and help our children succeed in life. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Palm Beach County invites you to NAMI's Parents & Teachers As Allies presentation during Mental Health Awareness Month to learn more about the possible waning signs of early onset mental illness in children and adolescents. This 2-hrs. workshop is free of charge at the following Palm Beach County Libraries during the month of May.

Volunteers Needed at New Birth Deliverance Baptist Church Food Pantry
New Birth Deliverance Baptist Church, at 1650 S. Main Street, Belle Glade (the White and Purple/Pink church on the corner across from Glades Ice) delivers food to the needy on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. They are in need of volunteers on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays and Wednesday of the month to assist with sorting food supplies, making up food bags, organizing the food pantry, etc. Tuesdays 12:00 - 2:00, Wednesdays 11:30 - 3:00.
