Glades Cooking Matters Nutrition Education ~ Volunteer Instructor Orientation Feb. 21
The Glades Initiative, Inc. is implementing the Cooking Matters Nutrition Education program throughout the Glades. This is a 6 week cooking class th at teaches low-income families how to prepare healthy meals on a low budget, helping them improve the way they shop, cook, and eat. The program empowers families at risk of hunger with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make healthy and affordable meals. The class is offered in both English and Spanish to adults, families (parents with children), teens, and children.
Volunteer Instructors are needed to fill the following roles:
- Culinary Instructors - experience in culinary arts preferred, but not required.
- Nutrition Instructors - experience in nutrition preferred, but not required.
- Class Assistants - to assist with class preparation, organizational skills required.
Volunteer time commitment for each course is two to three hours per week for six weeks. Volunteer orientation is provided by The Glades Initiative, along with Instructor and class participant materials. We have a Volunteer Instructor Orientation scheduled at the Arc of the Glades on February 21, 2014 from 9:30 to 11:30. Click here for map: Map of Arc of the Glades. 2014 Trafficking In America Conference: Restoring Humanity from Modern Day Slavery
For 10 years we have worked to educate America about the issues surrounding human trafficking. As Trafficking In America Task Force works to prepare for the 2014 National Trafficking In America Conference we are mindful of all that has been accomplished since we first began our work in 2004. We have seen a tremendous rise in a desire for education and moved from experiencing doors closed in our faces to invitations to present more education. The fruit is now being seen for the many years of persistence and we attribute some of this to the Annual Trafficking In America Conferences. The theme of the 2014 Trafficking In America Conference is Restoring Humanity From Modern Day Slavery.

Pahokee Mourns the Loss of Beloved Youth Leader - Erickia Abrams
It is with a heavy heart that that we share the loss of a wonderful 10 yr. staff member yesterday, Ms. Erickia Abrams. We learned on Sunday morning that Erickia had suffered a stroke and was put on life support at St. Mary's. Her young life was tragically cut short, leaving behind three teenage children. A memorial service will be held on Saturday and a fund is being established in Pahokee for her children. "For the Children of Erickia L Abrams" has been set up at PNC Bank 104 S. Lake Ave. Pahokee, Florida 33476 to accept any donations or contributions. Over the past 10 years, Erickia has touched so, so many of the youth in the town of Pahokee. The PYEA has become a trusted institution in Pahokee, and Erickia was one of the major reasons for its success. She was kind and generous and truly loved. She first joined HP in July 2003, starting at the Pahokee Beacon Center and becoming the Middle School Youth Leadership Coordinator in 2005. She became the PYEA Director in May 2007. Erickia kept that program running like clockwork and effectively handled all the many logistics involved with an afterschool program. She was beloved by her Group Leaders and mentored many of them over the years. Erickia had a wonderful reputation with the principals at both Pahokee and Canal Point Elementary, as well as the City of Pahokee. She annually received high scores on the Prime Time Quality Improvement Scale assessment. Gove Elementary School's Career Day Is Coming
Gove Elementary School's annual Career Week is on the horizon. We hope that you will volunteer to share your professional experiences with our students to make this week truly rewarding. We are looking for community members to volunteer to speak about their profession at Gove. You will be asked to give a short 20 minute presentation about your job, education, training, and how you made the transition from school to your current occupation. You will be giving the same presentation approximately three times to three different groups of students. We are also looking for volunteers to share their work vehicle with the students.

Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, will address the Forum Club Feb. 19. The program will be an armchair discussion with the former Speaker of the House conducted by WPTV's NewsChannel 5 anchor Michael Williams. Pelosi has lead the House Democrats for a decade and has represented San Francisco, California's 12th District for 26 years. In October, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American Women's rights movement. Part I includes topics covering local rules and regulations; identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect; health, safety and nutrition; and school-age appropriate practices. Part II will introduce the participant to a specialized school-age curriculum, Advancing Youth Development (AYD). 2014 Heroes in Medicine Nominations
Do you know a Hero? It's time to salute the heroes among us. Palm Beach County Medical Society Services, a non-profit organization, is hosting the 11th Annual Heroes in Medicine Awards on Thursday, May 8, 2014. These prestigious awards honor individuals and organizations throughout Palm Beach County that use their skills and resources in the field of health care to provide outstanding services for the people of our local, national and global communities. Proceeds from this event benefit Project Access, providing health care for low income, uninsured residents of Palm Beach County and the Medical Society's medical scholarship fund. To be considered for an award, nominations must be received by Friday, February 14, 2014 at 5 p.m. No late nominations will be accepted. Finalists will be interviewed in person on Saturday, March 8, 2014 between 8:30 a.m. and noon.
