Glades PATCH & the  REACH Health Fair Planning Committee Give Thanks

A wonderful medical mission occurred last Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the CL Brumback  Health Center.  A 13 year tradition in the Glades.  Free medical care and education was offered to our neediest and most vulnerable residents - targeted to the uninsured, under-insured, and those that don't seek regular medical care.  add stats here...

Glades PATCH and the 2014 REACH Health Fair Planning Committee would like to thank all who volunteered in many ways by distributing flyers, donating items, volunteering at the event, assisting in the planning, preparing food, donating your time and efforts, sponsoring and donating funds to make this event a success.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Palm Beach County, FL-For 22 years HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death among blacks between the ages of 25 and 44.  With the improvements in treatment and care it is now the 4th leading cause of death.  However, the disease continues to infect disproportionate numbers of black men and women versus all other ethnic groups; 1 in 58 black males and 1 in 83 black females. "We continue to educate, test and treat the black community about the HIV/AIDS," said Palm Beach County Health Department Minority AIDS Coordinator Metris Batts.  "Through continued awareness we hope to stop the growing number of infected black people in our area."

Free Hands- Only CPR Training to be Offered

When seconds count, someone may be counting on a nearby friend, relative, neighbor or county resident to provide hands- only CPR. Participants should wear comfortable clothing.Knowing hands- only CPR can help save lives. Early medical intervention in cardiac arrest victims is a key component to improving survival rates.By increasing the number of county residents familiar with the skills and techniques to perform hands- only CPR, cardiac arrest victims may receive critical help from a trained county resident in the early stages of a medical emergency.

Pahokee Mourns the Loss of Beloved Youth Leader - Erickia Abrams

It is with a heavy heart that that we share the loss of a wonderful 10 yr. staff member yesterday, Ms. Erickia Abrams. We learned on Sunday morning that Erickia had suffered a stroke and was put on life support at St. Mary's. Her young life was tragically cut short, leaving behind three teenage children. A memorial service will be held on Saturday and a fund is being established in Pahokee for her children. "For the Children of Erickia L Abrams" has been set up at PNC Bank 104 S. Lake Ave. Pahokee, Florida 33476 to accept any donations or contributions. Over the past 10 years, Erickia has touched so, so many of the youth in the town of Pahokee.  The PYEA has become a trusted institution in Pahokee, and Erickia was one of the major reasons for its success.    She was kind and generous and truly loved. She first joined HP in July 2003, starting at the Pahokee Beacon Center and becoming the Middle School Youth Leadership Coordinator in 2005.  She became the PYEA Director in May 2007.  Erickia kept that program running like clockwork and effectively handled all the many logistics involved with an afterschool program.  She was beloved by her Group Leaders and mentored many of them over the years.  Erickia had a wonderful reputation with the principals at both Pahokee and Canal Point Elementary, as well as the City of Pahokee.  She annually received high scores on the Prime Time Quality Improvement Scale assessment.

The Glades Neighborhood Postcard Project

The Neighborhood Postcard Project collects personal positive from residents in marginalized neighborhoods who send postcards with positive stories about their community  to random people in the same city to change perception and build community.  Why?

"The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, it is that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story."

The stories are collected through postcards that residents send to random local residents to create a stronger connection between people and communities. Help break down negative stereotypes and build community in the Glades.  Send your postcard:
