  ________________________________________________________________

Giving Tuesday is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The second annual Giving Tuesday is on December 3, 2013. In the same way that retail stores take part in Black Friday, we want the giving community to come together for Giving Tuesday

For Giving Tuesday,The Glades Initiative is spearheading a canned food drive to benefit the food pantries and soup kitchens that are members of the Glades Area Food Bank. These food distribution sites will help less fortunate Glades families during this holiday season. We will place boxes to collect donations at various locations throughout the cities of South Bay, Belle Glade, Pahokee, and Canal Point starting on

GivingTuesday, Dec. 3rd and collected on Friday Dec. 7.
The main collection site will be at the Glades Initiative, Inc. office at 141 SE Avenue C, Belle Glade.

Arts & Crafts for Sales at The Glades Initiative Until Dec. 13 to benefit United Way

The Glades Initiative kicked off their workplace campaign for the United Way of Palm Beach County on November 18.  At The Glades Initiative, Inc. we strongly believe in giving back to the community.  We feel that it's our duty to offer our time, talents, and financial support to assist our neighbors in need, and we invite our employees to do the same.

United Way of Palm Beach County partners with many local community organizations to include The Glades Initiative - as well as businesses, government, volunteers, and donors to identify the needs of our community and create smart solutions that get real results.  Without the support and volunteer services, critical health and human service programs in our county would not be available to those who need help.  Many people, perhaps your friends, family members, or neighbors - have benefited from a United Way - funded health and human service program - such as those offered by The Glades Initiative, Inc.

For their giving campaign, the employees of The Glades Initiative are selling holiday themed handmade arts and crafts items as well as doing a silent auction on donated household items.  Some of the arts and crafts include custom decorated holiday gift bags, handmade brown sugar facial scrubs, handmade peppermint foot scrub, candy cane sleighs made by Carol Rodriguez, and custom made "bling" phone cases made by Sandy Desty.

Photos of all items can be viewed on their Facebook Page Album at  http://www.facebook.com/gladesinitiative.org

World AIDS Day  2013

It has been 25 years since the World Health Organization and the United Nations first declared December 1st as World AIDS Day.  During that time much has been done to create awareness, save lives and slow the spread of the disease."While advances in the treatment of HIV and AIDS continue, there is still much work to be done," said Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County Director, Alina Alonso, M.D., "And while the number of new AIDS cases has declined over the last several years, it's important to remember, people are still being diagnosed with the disease every day in our county and throughout South Florida.  Through prevention efforts, we hope that number will become zero." In Palm Beach County there are almost 8,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.  However, the consensus among HIV/AIDS educators and medical providers is that number is likely 20% greater.  Dr. Alonso added, "We are encouraging everyone to get tested. A person who knows their status can get life prolonging care and by knowing, can help stop the spread of this acquired disease."

Florida Center for Fiscal and Economic Policy~ MAGI: Change to Medicaid Eligibility & What It Means for Florida

Starting January 2014, Florida will begin using the concept of Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) when determining eligibility for its Medicaid and CHIP programs. More than just a number, MAGI is a new method for counting and calculating income under the Affordable Care Act.Specifically, MAGI will provide a basis for aligning, simplifying and streamlining eligibility across Medicaid, CHIP, and the Premium Tax Credits and Cost-Sharing Reductions available through the new Health Insurance Marketplace.
