Triple P Positive Parenting Program Offered in Spanish Starting Oct. 29

The Triple P Seminar Series consists of three 90 minute presentations (including Q&A) facilitated by individuals trained and accredited by Triple P America.  The Seminars offer an overview and discussion of the principles, strategies, and benefits of Triple P and positive parenting. The overarching aims of Triple P are to promote the independence and health of families through the enhancement of parents' knowledge, skills, and confidence; to promote the development of non-violent, protective, and nurturing environments for children; to promote the development, growth, health, and social competence of young children in particular; to reduce the incidence of child abuse, behavioral and emotional problems in childhood and adolescence, delinquency and substance abuse, and academic failure; and to enhance the competence, resourcefulness, and self-sufficiency of parents in raising their children.  The seminars also offer an opportunity for parents to learn about other levels of Triple P available if they are interested in individual support around a particular parenting or behavioral concern.

This Seminar will be presented in Spanish

Glades Public Workshops Set to Discuss Master Plan

The Glades Region Master Plan is a community-driven process that will craft a blueprint for economic development and redevelopment, focusing on major employment centers including the proposed Intermodal Logistics Center.  Two workshops have been scheduled to provide a forum for Glades residents to learn, ask questions, and make suggestions about the plan components, the results of current studies and recommendations for infrastructure improvements. During the week following each workshop, a project team will set up a design studio at the above locations to provide an open forum for members of the public to visit at their convenience to ask questions, learn more and provide input.  The workshops and design studios are a key element to the public participation process and are intended to keep Glades neighborhoods engaged, informed and involved in the planning process. Many of you may remember that Palm Beach County received a $2 million grant to do this. They are doing their part- now it is time for us to do our part. Our responsibility is to provide them with input on what we want and need here in the Glades as we plan for our future.

Depression in the Workplace: New Research

Dr. David Shern, CEO of Mental Health America, will present new research from NIMH and Mental Health America about how to improve productivity and reduce absenteeism due to depression in the workplace. With depression affecting 1 in 4 employees with a detrimental impact on workplace productivity as well as on health insurance costs, more businesses than ever must examine the role of depression in workplace productivity. In fact, over a 3-month period, employee's dealing with depression miss on average 4.8 workdays and experience 11 days of reduced productivity! Individuals with untreated depression can double health care expenditures associated with the treatment of other conditions.

Employers have good reasons for getting depression recognition and treatment right. Dr. Shern will present research that involves a rigorous return on investment analysis (ROI) of a specific approach to depression management which is coordinated with primary care. This research demonstrates that it is definitely a good business decision to manage depression that improves productivity and reduces absenteeism. Dr. Shern will also discuss  the results of a second project, which looked at the expectations that businesses should have of their health insurers.

Volunteer Training Scheduled for Cooking Matters Nutrition Education Program

As part of the Strategic Plan to Address Food Security in the Glades, The Glades Initiative, Inc., along with our partners will be implementing the Cooking Matters Nutrition Education program. This is a 6 week cooking class that teaches families how to prepare healthy meals on a low budget, helping families improve the way they shop, cook, and eat. The mission of the program is to empower families at risk of hunger with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make healthy and affordable meals. The class can be offered to adults, families (parents with children), teens, children, and seniors.

We are planning to offer our first 6 week course this October on Sunday afternoon's to a group of teens in Belle Glade. After that, we intend to offer the course throughout the Glades, with preference given to organizations involved in our strategic planning efforts.  However, before we can move forward with scheduling, we are in need of volunteers to fill the following roles:

  • Culinary Educators - experience in culinary arts preferred, but not required.
  • Nutrition Educators - experience in nutrition preferred, but not required.

Volunteer time commitment for each course is two to three hours per week for six weeks. Volunteer training is provided by our partners, FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical and Nutrition Education to Youth).
