The Glades REACH fair began to address healthcare disparities and access in our community. Each year, hundreds of uninsured and underinsured children and families attend the REACH health fair to access quality health care and education at no cost. We will have medically trained interpreters on site during the entire event to assist those with limited English language skills. This project features approximately 100 service providers. We are planning to hold this event during a Saturday in February 1 2014 in Belle Glade.
Our planning committee, organized through Glades PATCH (Planned Approach to Community Health) will be holding our next planning meeting this Thursday, and subsequent meetings the 2nd Thursday every month. We welcome all interested community members to participate. We will need assistance with marketing, sponsorships, facility management, volunteers, and medical management.

Glades Public Workshops Set to Discuss Master Plan
The Glades Region Master Plan is a community-driven process that will craft a blueprint for economic development and redevelopment, focusing on major employment centers including the proposed Intermodal Logistics Center. Two workshops have been scheduled to provide a forum for Glades residents to learn, ask questions, and make suggestions about the plan components, the results of current studies and recommendations for infrastructure improvements. During the week following each workshop, a project team will set up a design studio at the above locations to provide an open forum for members of the public to visit at their convenience to ask questions, learn more and provide input. The workshops and design studios are a key element to the public participation process and are intended to keep Glades neighborhoods engaged, informed and involved in the planning process.

Volunteer Training Scheduled for Cooking Matters Nutrition Education Program
As part of the Strategic Plan to Address Food Security in the Glades, The Glades Initiative, Inc., along with our partners will be implementing the Cooking Matters Nutrition Education program. This is a 6 week cooking class that teaches families how to prepare healthy meals on a low budget, helping families improve the way they shop, cook, and eat. The mission of the program is to empower families at risk of hunger with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make healthy and affordable meals. The class can be offered to adults, families (parents with children), teens, children, and seniors.
We are planning to offer our first 6 week course this October on Sunday afternoon's to a group of teens in Belle Glade. After that, we intend to offer the course throughout the Glades, with preference given to organizations involved in our strategic planning efforts. However, before we can move forward with scheduling, we are in need of volunteers to fill the following roles:
Culinary Educators - experience in culinary arts preferred, but not required.
Nutrition Educators - experience in nutrition preferred, but not required.
Class Assistants - to assist with class preparation, organizational skills required.
Volunteer time commitment for each course is two to three hours per week for six weeks. Volunteer training is provided by our partners, FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical and Nutrition Education to Youth).
