Welcome Ashlee, to the Parent & Family Center!
Hello Everyone!

My name is Ashlee Talbot and I am a graduate student studying Higher Education in Student Affairs at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts. This summer, I am interning with the New Maverick Orientation Office which partners with the Parent and Family Center here at UT Arlington.  Part of my responsibilities for the summer include providing supervision to a team of orientation leaders, as well as working on the PFC monthly newsletter and our social media campaign.

I am very exciting to have the opportunity to write to all of you, and thought that I would take a little bit of time to talk about my personal college experience. I went to school at Fitchburg State University which was about two hours from my home in Salem. I initially was a Communications Media major, but was also considering education, and I choose my school because it had strong programs in both these majors . (That and both the train station and a grocery store were within walking distance, since I didn't have a car). Since I had worked at overnight summer camps for the past three years, I had a relatively easy transition to college. My mother and I had a very brief goodbye the day she dropped me off, which she later told me was because if she lingered too long she probably would have started crying. A story she loves to tell is how she had to borrow a friend's minivan in order to fit all of the stuff I brought with me, only to bring most of it back with her since I was a triple and there wasn't much room for anything.  I think that being placed in a triple is one of the things that students dread about college. Sometimes they end up working out, and sometimes the don't. It really depends on a person's personality. I got along okay with my two roommates, who were a bit more sociable than I would have liked. Thankfully, I was moved to a double after two weeks. Even better, my new roommate was actually the daughter of my mom's work friend!  Her and I quickly became good friends and it was she who encouraged me to get involved on campus.

Some advice I have for students, no matter if they're first years or seniors, is to become involved in whatever way you feel comfortable, whether it's through sports, clubs, or campus events. There is so much more to the college experience than just classes, parties, and living away from home.  You have to put yourself out there and find what's the right fit for you. I really enjoyed student activities, but I wasn't a huge fan of student government. I stuck with student activities all four years (we had an organization similar to UTA's EXCEL), and it was this involvement that led me to pursue a Master's in Higher Education.  For the past year, I have worked as a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Involvement and Activities at Salem State University where I co-advise SSU's Program Council, Commuter Association, and Leadership Honor Society. I am very grateful for this opportunity and hope that I will be able to find a similar professional position when I graduate in 2016.

I am super excited for this summer and for what will be an amazing and enlightening experience here at UT Arlington!

The UTA Bookstore not only provides for all of your Course materials, UTA apparel, and Apple/PC needs, we also have a full service authorized repair center on-site.  At the Maverick Technology Center, we have Apple Certified Technicians that can perform service (both in-warranty and out-of-warranty) on your Apple products, and out-of-warranty service on any PC product.  The process is much faster and more accessible from campus than any off-campus alternative, and in most cases, cheaper.

By providing this service center, we hope to provide complete service to the students and faculty of UTA by being your primary technological resource, whether you are looking to purchase a new PC or needing to fix an old one!
