Association benefit of the month: Complimentary visits to the Maverick Activities Center (MAC)

Each month we will be highlighting benefits available to you as a member of the Maverick Parent & Family Association. Hopefully this will remind you to take advantage of these great resources!

This month we are highlighting complimentary visits to the Maverick Activities Center (MAC). As a member of the Association, you are eligible for two free visits per year. You are also eligible to purchase a MAC membership at the alumni rate.

To use your two free visits to the MAC, parents and family members should stop by the Parent & Family Center (located in the basement of the University Center, suite B150) and pick up your complimentary pass prior to going to the MAC. Please note you will need this pass and a photo ID to gain entry into the MAC.

Reception for Association students

The Parent & Family Center will be hosting a reception at the end of the semester for all students whose parents are members of the Parent & Family Association. Remind your students to stop by the Carlisle Suite in the University Center on April 15, 2013 between 12 pm and 2 pm to pick up complimentary Scantrons, Blue Books, pencils, and light snacks.

Participate in the Big Event with your student

The Big Event  is the largest one-day, student-run service project in the U.S., occurring at 72 universities, including UT Arlington. This year, the Parent & Family Center has partnered with the Big Event to encourage parents to join their students and complete a service project together. Registration is now open until April 19. There are a variety of project sites to choose from.

The Big Event will be held April 27, 2013. Volunteers will need to arrive at their project sites at 8 am and serve until 12 pm. Once volunteers finish at their project site, they are invited to a Thank You Celebration on campus from 12-2 pm to receive a free meal and enjoy music and activities. We hope you and your family can participate in this special UT Arlington tradition!

Upcoming Success Series workshops

Success Series University College invites all students to join "The Success Series," a workshop series designed to improve academic performance and enhance important life skills.

There are several workshops scheduled for the spring semester on a variety of topics. The full schedule can be found here. April topics include:
Shorthorn Housing Fair to showcase housing options

Is your son or daughter looking for housing options for next year? The Shorthorn Housing Fair is the perfect opportunity to gather information about housing options and resources. The fair will be held April 10, 2013 in the University Center Palo Duro Lounge from 10 am - 2 pm. There will also be a housing guide published in the April 10th edition of the Shorthorn (the UT Arlington campus newspaper) that your student can pick up.

There are many elements to consider when making a housing change. Here are a few questions you can discuss with your son or daughter to help ensure a successful living experience:

  • How much can your student afford?
  • Does your student want to live with roommates? If so, how much is each roommate willing to pay?
  • Does your student want a furnished or unfurnished apartment?
  • If unfurnished, how will each roommate contribute to furniture, decorations, etc.?
  • How will your student commute to campus?
  • Are all roommates equally committed to the rental agreement? Remember that when you sign a lease, you are legally responsible to fulfill the requirements.

We'd like your feedback!

Each year, the Parent & Family Center distributes a survey to parents of UT Arlington students to learn how we can better serve parents and students. Your feedback is very important to us as we begin planning programs and services for the next school year.

Make sure to watch your email for the link to this survey. The survey will be open April 12-26, 2013. We look forward to learning how we can partner with you to ensure student success!
