Association benefit of the month: Maverick Discount Program

Each month we will be highlighting benefits available to you as a member of the Maverick Parent & Family Association. Hopefully this will remind you to take advantage of these great resources!

 

This month we are highlighting the Maverick Discount Program. Parents can use their Association ID card to participate in this program; just show participating vendors your card. Before bringing your student back to campus for the Spring semester, make sure to browse the various discounts to make your visit fun and affordable. There are numerous discounts, including hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options. 

Activities Fair Day

Is your student looking for a way to get more involved this spring? If so, encourage them to attend the Spring Activities Fair Day, January 23 from 10 am - 2 pm in the Palo Duro in the University Center.

Intramural sports registration going on now

Is your student looking for a fun way to get involved on campus as well as make new friends? From team sports, to individual sports, to online competitions, to gaming, if students want to be involved, the intramural sports program is for them.

 

Check out the intramural sports website for the schedule of team and individual sports available this Spring semester. Entries are due soon for many of the sports!

Don't forget to submit your FAFSA!

As a friendly reminder, the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, must be submitted every year to ensure that the most recent information is being used to determine a student's financial aid eligibility.

 

The FAFSA for the 2013-2014 school year became available January 1, 2013. Students are encouraged to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible.

Presidential search to narrow to three candidates  

Last June, President Spaniolo announced his plan to retire. However, he said he would remain in the role until his successor was chosen. Currently, the presidential search advisory Spaniolo committee is narrowing down six candidates to three.

The next step in the process is for the UT Board of Regents to interview the top three candidates in February. Names of candidates will not be released until a finalist is selected.  
IRS 1098-T forms to be mailed in January
In January of each year, UT Arlington mails an IRS form 1098-T to all students who had qualified tuition and other related educational expenses billed to them during the previous calendar year. This form is informational only and should not be considered as tax opinion or advice. It serves to alert students that they may be eligible for federal income tax education credit or deduction. Receipt of Form 1098-T does not indicate eligibility for a tax credit or deduction. To determine the amount of qualified tuition and fees paid and the amount of scholarships and grants received, the taxpayer should use their own financial records.

The 1098-T Tuition Statement will be available online in MyMav and will also be mailed to the student's designated mailing address by January 31. If a valid mailing address is not designated in MyMav, it will be mailed to the student's valid home or campus address. For more information, visit the Student Financial Services website.
Reminder: Applications still open for the Parent & Family Association spring scholarship
Encourage your student to apply now for the Maverick Parent & Family Association spring scholarship. The Association awards two, $800 scholarships every fall and spring semester. One scholarship is awarded to a freshman student, while the other is awarded to an upperclassman student. All students who have a parent or family member in the Association and are in good standing with the university are eligible to apply.

Students can find the scholarship on the Parent & Family Association website. Applications can be submitted online, or students can also download the paper application and turn it in to the Parent & Family Center office (located in the basement of the University Center, B150).

The deadline to apply for the spring scholarship is February 8, 2013.
Don't forget to opt-in to the Parent & Family Association membership directory

The Maverick Parent & Family Association has begun working on a membership directory. The directory will be an electronic document that is only available to members. It will include the following information for each family:

 

  • First and last name of parents/family members
  • Hometown
  • Email address
  • Student name(s) and classification(s)

The purpose of the directory is for parents to be able to connect with one another. For example, two families from the same area may want to work out a carpool arrangement when their students travel home. 

 

If you would like to be included in this directory, email parents@uta.edu and simply type "opt in" in the subject line. Also, please provide your preferred email address(es) to include in the directory. Please RSVP by January 6, 2013. 

MavAlert emergency notification system

UT Arlington uses multiple outlets to keep the campus community informed about emergency situations and rapidly changing conditions - from hazardous weather and campus closures to building emergencies and life-threatening criminal activity. As the MavAlert new semester is starting, encourage your students to check and make sure they are signed up for MavAlerts and their emergency contact information is correct so they can be contacted quickly in the event of an emergency.

 

Students should update their emergency contact information through MyMav. For more information on emergency communication, visit here

Fraternity and sorority recruitment to begin in early spring

Fraternity and Sorority Life offers many campus involvement opportunities. The fraternity and sorority community at UT Arlington is comprised of 31 national and local organizations with four governing councils. Greek members represent about 3% of the UT Arlington student population; members hold a variety of leadership positions throughout the campus community. Fraternity and Sorority Life provides athletic and social opportunities, and most importantly, assists in the development of meaningful lifelong friendships.

 

Students interested in joining a Panhellenic Sorority should apply for Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment, January 17-21, 2013 by 4 pm on January 17. Applications can be submitted online at this website

 

Students interested in joining an Interfraternity Council Fraternity should apply for Interfraternity Council Recruitment, February 4-8th, 2013 by 4 pm on February 1. Applications can be submitted online at this website
