Apply now for the Black Leadership Institute

The Black Leadership Institute (BLI) provides an excellent opportunity for the African American community at UT Arlington. Selected BLI participants will be invited to a series of workshops designed to enhance leadership skills, educate on the African culture from a historical framework, and motivate students to be successful inside and outside the classroom.

The next Black Leadership Institute is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013. Applications are available now and must be turned in by Nov. 21.

Tutoring resources available for students

As final exams approach, remind your student about all of the tutoring resources available on campus. These include:

MAVPACK care packages available for purchase

Send your student a care package to show support during finals! MAVPACK care packages are $25 and include a UTA t-shirt, energizing snacks and goodies, Scantrons and Blue Book, personalized note from sender, and delivery to residence hall or on-campus apartment.

If you have a graduating senior, you can upgrade your MAVPACK care package. For $50, it will include all of the above as well as a one-year membership to the UTA Alumni Association and an Alumni t-shirt.

Visit the Student Alumni Association website for more information and to order.
Free study sessions through Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of peer-assisted, weekly study sessions designed to help students succeed in traditionally difficult courses. During SI sessions, students can compare notes, discuss readings, and work together to master course material. SI is free and open to all students in the supported course. The SI course list and schedule can be found here. All students are encouraged to attend SI, though the program is voluntary. It has been proven that regular participation in SI can help students raise their course grades by one-half to a full letter grade. SI helps students succeed and meet their goals!
Don't forget to use your P&F Association ID card to take advantage of the Maverick Discount Program!

Thank you for attending Parent & Family Weekend
Thank you to all who attended Parent & Family Weekend, Oct. 26-28, 2012! This year we had a record-breaking 841 parents, family members, and students register for the weekend. Families had the opportunity to watch a theatre production, participate in a fall Fall Festival festival with live music, see a glass blowing demonstration, attend a Movin' Mavs basketball game, eat dinner with the president of the university, and much more. Most importantly, families were given the opportunity to spend time together in their student's environment.

We hope to see all of you next year for Parent & Family Weekend, Oct. 25-27, 2013!

LGBT Parents of College Students Needed for Survey Participation

The University of Maryland is conducting a national study to explore the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parents of college students and recent graduates. The information provided will help colleges and universities better understand the issues faced by LGBT parents, the interactions LGBT parents have with their student's college/university, and the campus climate for LGBT parents and their students.

If you're the parent of a college student or recent graduate (within the past 5 years) and you self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, please consider completing the survey.  The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete.  Responses are completely anonymous.  Survey participants who choose to provide an email address will be eligible for a drawing to include five $25 Amazon gift certificates.  Winners will be randomly selected, and the email address will not be connected with survey responses.

If you do not qualify for this survey but you know someone who does, please forward this request to him or her. We appreciate your help with spreading the word.

The following is the link to complete the survey:

The deadline for responding is November 15, 2012.
