If you are familiar with the term FAFSA then you've probably dealt with a college bound child. FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid and is the process, through the government, to apply for needs-based federal student aid. The form for the 2014-15 filing is almost upon us. You can begin filing January 1.
Many times parents will assume that they are not going to qualify for needs-based aid and do not bother to file. This is a mistake for several reasons. First, the FAFSA is used to determine a student's EFC or Expected Family Contribution. This is the minimum amount the government determines that a family must pay towards that student annual cost of attendance at college. Without this, the family automatically qualifies themselves for 100% of the cost.
