Antiques Collectibles and Handcrafts Shows
Greetings!

Welcome to the  Tanners Marketplace Newsletter.

Big News!!!

We are in negotiations with the Legends at Sparks Marina Outlet Mall to do at least one and maybe several Antiques and Collectibles only shows at the mall.

The first one will be in May.  We are deciding on the exact weekend now so please let me know right away  if you would like to participate and if there are any other shows that I need to be aware of so we don't have a schedule conflict.  We are trying to keep the booth costs the same as at the Events Center. It is a beautiful inside location with 28000 square feet of space in the Reno/Sparks area's newest mall.  More details coming soon.

There are still a few spaces available for the April show.

It's easy to sign up and easy to sell your things at the show.  To sign up just click the Vendor Signup Form link to the right and follow the prompts.  A $30 deposit is required to hold your space which is refundable up to 48 hours before the show or applied to a future show.  You can pay it via a check mailed to us, Paypal or by calling with a credit card number.   You can see the available spaces by clicking here:

       Floor Plan with spaces detail

Setup starts at 12:00 noon on Friday.  When you arrive you just check in at the front table and we'll show you where your space is if you don't know.  If you ordered tables and chairs they will already be in your space.  You just arrange the tables like you want and display your items.  Don't forget to bring table coverings to spruce up your booth.

Many vendors like to shop at the other vendors booths on Friday and in the morning before the public arrives.  Then you get first pick and it can be hard to get out and shop when we are busy.  We open the doors to the public at 9:00 but the vendors can get in at 8:00.

You are responsible for collecting sales tax and will get a form to fill out with your name, address and the total of your taxable sales.  To make it easier, most of our vendors price things with the sales tax included and just put down their total sales on the form.  You do need to remit the sales tax amount when you turn in the form at the end of the show.

Burning Man is coming!  The annual pilgrimage to the Black Rock Desert is a great opportunity for all of our vendors. Besides the obvious clothing vendors many Playa Goers will be looking for accessories to complete their look.  Also think about how something can be re-purposed - i.e. a cup and saucer can become a flower if they are mounted on a stick. Think of that when you plan what to bring to the show.

The TV show "The Old House Antique Showcase" will be back filming at the April show.  They will be sponsoring Free appraisals /evaluations again on Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00.

The show airs Sunday mornings at 7:00 on either channel 6 or 46 depending on your carrier. If you have any comments or questions for the TV staff please contact Terri.

What is a Pie Bird???

A pie bird, pie vent, pie whistle, pie funnel, or pie chimney is a hollow ceramic device, originating in Europe, shaped like a funnel, chimney or up-stretched bird or other figurine with an opening at the top.

Funnel-style steam vents have been placed in the center of fruit and meat pies during cooking since Victorian times; birds and other shapes came later.

Pie funnels were used to prevent pie filling from boiling up and leaking through the crust by allowing steam to escape from inside the pie.  They also supported the pastry crust in the center of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle, and are occasionally known as "crustholders". Older ovens had more problems with uniform heating, and the pie bird prevented boil-over in pie cooking.

The traditional inverted funnels with arches on the bottom for steam to enter were followed by ceramic birds, and since the 1940s they have been produced in a multitude of designs.  This trend has been particularly noticeable in recent times, due to their increasing popularity as gifts and collectors' items rather than simply utilitarian kitchen tools.

Help Spread The Word!

If you would like to help advertise the show we have created a flier with tear off tabs that you can print out and post on local bulletin boards or at your office. Many grocery stores etc. have places to post local events and every little bit helps get the word out. The more people that come the better everyone's sales will be!

Click Here for a Printable PDF file of a flier to post on local bulletin boards

If it doesn't print in color you may have to save it locally and open it in adobe Reader.

There are 3 fliers on each page.

If you are unable to print them out please let me know and I can mail some to you.

I am making some advertising signs that are 18" x 24" that can be placed near a busy road the week before the show.  Let me know if you have a place where one can be put that will show well and not be illegal and I can see about getting it to you when they arrive.  They will have to be picked back up right after the show so they don't disappear.

We are open to any ideas that you have to let more collectors know about the show and get attendance up. On that note please click the Forward to a Friend link above and let anyone you think might be interested know about us.
Places to Stay:
A few people have asked if there are places to stay close to the Events Center.  The Events Center has RV spaces available (see the bottom of the show application page) and  there are several motels close by and the casinos are close too. Kayak.com lists some close by ones. You can narrow the search in the location box.:
A friend of mine stays at the SandsRegency Hotel Casino when he visits. They usually have some good deals going. I did a quick check and found their deals page:
Once he visited the first time they keep sending him free nights coupons.
Motel 6 is about a block away:
Days Inn is just a little further:
Americas Best Travel Inn is right at the freeway exit too:
There is a 24 hour Denny's and a Carrows restaurant very close. (walking dist. from motels, right at the freeway exit)
Let's make this a fun forum to keep interest and excitement up for the shows!

Sincerely,

The Nevada State Bird:
The Nevada State bird is the Mountain Bluebird.
It was adopted as the state bird in 1967,
This isn't the noisy Bluejay but  a small thrush found on ranchland and other open areas of the American West. Its song is a clear, short warble like the caroling of a robin. The male is azure blue with a white belly, while the female is brown with a bluish rump, tail, and wings.
It prefers more open habitats than other bluebirds and can be found in colder habitats in winter. Only the female bluebird builds the nest. The male sometimes acts as if he is helping, but he either brings no nest material or he drops it on the way. (sound like someone you know??)

Mountain bluebirds hover over the ground and fly down to catch insects, and may also fly from a perch to catch them. Their main diet consists of insects and berries.

Great Quote...

...ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON. HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, "THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN,

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND," WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.*

BUT JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK -
"GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY."

MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGHT IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL  SOVIET COSMONAUT. HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS.

OVER THE YEARS, MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE - 'GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY' STATEMENT MEANT,  BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.

ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY , FLORIDA , WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION ABOUT MR. GORSKY TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED BECAUSE MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION. HERE IS THE ANSWER TO "WHO WAS MR GORSKY":

IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WESTERN TOWN , HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOR'S YARD BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW. HIS NEIGHBORS WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY.

AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY, "SEX! YOU WANT SEX? YOU'LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON."

It broke the place up.

NEIL ARMSTRONG'S FAMILY CONFIRMED THIS IS A TRUE STORY.
