MDH Announces Official Start of SCID Screening for all Babies in Minnesota

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease (SCID) screening for all babies in Minnesota has officially started. Screening began with specimens received Monday, January 7, 2013, and results are now available through the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

A SCID/Primary T-Cell Lymphopenia line has been added to the final newborn screening reports, and MDH has sent a letter to hospitals as well as NICU staff with specific information about their population as it relates to SCID screening.

MDH has also attached fact sheets that will accompany any positive screening results as well as the Immunologist/Infectious Disease Specialist List. During an initial grant period, MDH will cover Tier 1 diagnostic testing, so a fact sheet has been created to assist providers in ordering the test and having it billed to MDH. Visit the chapter's newborn screening page for more information.

If there are any questions about the start of SCID screening, please don't hesitate to contact MDH through Amy Gaviglio, M.S., CGC, Genetic Counselor, Short Term Follow-Up Supervisor, Minnesota Department of Health Newborn Screening Program, amy.gaviglio@state.mn.us, (651) 201-5451 (phone), (651) 215-6285 (fax).
