President's Message

Thank you to all who attended the birthday dinner meeting, including the several past presidents who were in attendance. Your attendance made the event a great success. A special thanks to members Pamela Legge and Dawn Manzano who shared with everyone the impact membership in SDAIP has had on their lives.

Save the date for the 75th Annual IAIP Convention. The Convention will take place on June 16, 2016 through June 18, 2016 in Richmond Virginia. If you find the cost of attending the national convention to be a bit steep, you might want to look into a scholarship to defray the cost of attendance. The philanthropic arm of IAIP known as the Legacy Foundation has scholarships available for members interested in pursuing educational opportunities including obtaining designations and insurance related degrees as well as attendance at IAIP conventions and conferences. Details on available scholarships and applications can be found on the IAIP website.

If anyone is interested in becoming an officer at the national level of IAIP, Officer Candidate forms are due on December 1, 2015. There are several positions available. Details on the open positions and the Officer Candidate forms can also be accessed via the IAIP website.

At our November meeting we will be hearing from representatives from Rachel's House and OPT. I hope to see you there!

Membership

As you all know we are celebrating our 79th year.  Through the years we've had a lot of successes and many changes have been made.

Our successes can be attributed to all the hard work and dedication of our presidents, the board and of course our members, without which we would not exist.  Let's make our coming 80th year our biggest success yet. I want to challenge everyone to bring a member on board so we can continue our momentum with growth and success.  SDAIP has a lot to offer our members in the way of benefits, rewards, education and lifelong friendships that are created over the time spent getting to know and interacting with one another.

This month we are spotlighting someone who has welcomed me into the Association with Open Arms and has always pushed me to get more involved and I know has my back and is there to support me.  Teresa is one of the reasons that I am as involved as I am in the Association.  As a mentor she has been there for me whenever I have needed her and is always there for questions that I have along the way.  Thank You for being you and for all that you have done for the Association.

My first insurance job was at Snapp & Associates Insurance.  As a mother, I'd seen my youngest start school and was now a recent graduate of Mesa College.  I hadn't been on a job interview in years! And was anxious about my first interview so I decided to set up a "practice" interview at a place I wasn't really interested in working (insurance).  Stress free since I was practicing for the job interview I really wanted the next day, I was relaxed and chatty and I actually interviewed with three people that day.  We genuinely liked each other and they offered me the job, and I started that day!  And that was the beginning of my insurance career and the start of a couple long term friendships!

"High Fives" to San Diego Insurance Staffing, as they placed me in my next couple insurance positions: First, at La Jolla Pacific Insurance where I was a transportation underwriter; next, at Alliant Specialty Insurance where I currently am a Workers' Compensation Underwriter in the Tribal First Program.  SDAIP (and IAIP) have been a big part of my career progression. I've taken many opportunities for education, networking (Local, Regional, & National), and one of the biggest boosts - taking the CWC course (Confidence While Communicating) which has given me confidence in speaking at meetings and even training others as opportunities have arisen.

On a more little personal note, I'm a newlywed and have been married to my wonderful husband Chris for five months!  And he's had the wonderful, if not scary, pleasure of meeting my four kids and most of my 17 grandkids. I love to travel (and luckily he does too!) and I'm always ready for a road trip (you get to see more) or a cruise or flight to almost anywhere.  Most recent and of course my favorite, was my honeymoon cruise to Alaska with a stop in Victoria, BC.  Tied for second are my trip to Russia (with my church), and trip to Hawaii for Region VIII conference a few years ago.  The conference was a blast and several of us hiked Diamond Head and went swimming with the sharks!  I've been to, or at least driven through 45 States (now including Alaska!) Still on my travel bucket list is a trip to Jerusalem, and a road trip to Kings Canyon National Park. My next trip is flying to Seattle in November to see my newest granddaughter who is just four months old.

I am happy to be in insurance and especially part of the SDAIP family.  That first silly practice interview, turned out to be a wonderful career for me!

GOLF COMMITTEE NEEDED!

Back by popular demand, our 2016 golf tournament benefiting OPT and Rachel's Women's Center, will be a Wine & Nine! The event will be held at the Loma Club (formerly Sail Ho) in Liberty Station. Nine holes of fun golf while sampling wine and light appetizers on the course!

Getting involved on a committee is the first step of engagement! Everyone's input & ideas are much needed and greatly appreciated. You don't need to be a golfer to participate; just willing to meet a few times prior to the event to share your thoughts. If you are interested in helping make this our best fund-raiser ever, please contact me at (619) 525-2675 or [email protected]. I will be working with the new manager at The Loma Club to work on some details prior to our first meeting. Thank you in advance for your interest and help!
