Stuffed Cavities: An Unbiased View on Insulation

Course Description: Arguably, selecting insulation is one of the most important decisions when designing a building assembly because of the many benefits these products provide in terms of service life, building durability and energy efficiency. This presentation explores the characteristics, advantages and cautions of the primary insulation for residential building assemblies (walls, roofs, and foundations), and then considers the installation methodologies that will optimize the building's energy efficiency. Come hear an unbiased view on insulation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the use, properties and benefits of various insulation types.
  • Learn what insulation to specify for your project and how to properly specify it.
  • Understand what can happen if insulation is not properly installed.
  • Explain the role that continuous insulation can play in meeting design and code requirements for cavity wall applications

Presented by: Srikanth Puttagunta, PE, VP, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Steven Winter Associates, Inc.

Murphy Brothers' Shore Road Project

National Award Winner

The Shore Road Project in Old Greenwich was recently recognized as one of the most innovative projects in the country. The honor was presented as part of the ICF Builder Awards, an international competition designed to showcase the advantages of building with Insulated Concrete Forms, commonly called ICFs. Winner in the "Small Residential" division, this is the 3rd major "builders award" presented to this home, beautifully designed by architect Rex Gedney of Crozier Gedney Architects.  Lois Arena of Steven Winter Associates served as the all-important project energy consultant.

The award presentation witnessed by hundreds of construction professionals associated with the industry took place at the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.  In presenting the award judges cited the complexity of the design, the striking architecture, and the challenges the construction team overcame to set a new standard for the entire ICF industry. "We hope our project's award recognition will encourage others to think green when designing and building or renovating their homes or buildings, whatever the size, style or location", said Chris Murphy, President of Murphy Brothers Contracting.
