HAPPY 2015!
LET'S SHARPEN YOUR DRAWING & PAINTING SKILLS

Dear Marilee,
Sorry my newsletters fell off the radar last year. It was an emotional time for my wife, Marilee and me. You see we lost our friend, mentor and hero. Marilee's dad, "Coby" past after a short battle with stage 4 multiple myeloma cancer. He was an amazing man who lived life to it's fullest. This 92 year old Texan still lived on his own, drove and handled his own affairs. He had an iron grip and could bring down a 29 year old in arm wrestling. He was a wizard at problem solving - ANYTHING. Coby was the youngest Eagle Scout in NW Indiana in 1938, Troop 20. He was a Tech Sergeant during WWII in the 5th Army Air Corp, Australia and worked for many auto companies - retiring from Chrysler. Some of you may have heard my stories about how he loved traveling north to our cabin. We are still in an undertow of emotions, but we are working through it. He was an incredible, loving man and has left a deep hole in our hearts.

The days are increasingly cold, big flakes of snow are flying and the holidays are a distant memory. So far our winter hasn't been as brutal as last year. Let's hope we've missed the bad weather bullet. I enjoy this time of the year because I escape to my studio. To be creative with my watercolors - exploring new subject matter, experimenting and painting. I hope you are, too.

As you will notice the newsletter format has changed. Instead of sending a very long email we have changed to a photo boxes with a captions. If you want to read the article just click on the picture or the READ MORE box. It will take you to a web page with the complete article. We have one You Tube video included and by request our goal is to include more and more video articles. If you have any questions or thoughts please share in the comments box at the bottom of the article.

In this month's newsletter: I've put together a 2014 IN RETROSPECT. I wanted to share some of my accomplishments and a few of my past and current students achievements. I have a section called LESSONS FROM THE STUDIO which includes my 35+ years of #drawing&painting knowledge and teaching experiences. PLUS my very popular FROM MY PERSONAL LIBRARY.

I promise I will be scheduling a couple of workshops in my studio this summer - dates to be announced. If you want to be placed on my workshop mailing list send me an email with name, email, phone number to info@DalePopovich.com.

Robert J Krajecki and I have started our Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting 101, 102, 103 on January 8, 2015 at the Palette & Chisel in Chicago. We are offering another 10-week session at the in March 17 through May 21. This series of classes has been popular at the P&C since 2004. I'm teaching a watercolor 5-week class on Thursday afternoons at the P&C. I'm very happy to announce I also added two new studio classes: Mainstreet Art Center in Lake Zurich, IL and Elmhurst Art Museum in Elmhurst, IL. Remember I also teach out of my studio in Northwest Indiana. The class is filled at this time, but drop me a note if you want to be placed on my waiting list. Need to get over a hump or some intense training, I offer private instruction. You can read more about my teaching classes at the bottom of this email.

Final note, if your art league is looking for a demo, workshop or judge, please call me (219.838.8645) and we can discuss details.

Thanks and let's start painting.
Sincerely,
Dale L Popovich

Every painting is a journey and it begins here, your research.
Picture taking, sketches, and finally your painting.

7 SECRETS TO FINDING GREAT REFERENCE MATERIAL
I don't know about you but plein air painting when the snow is flying and it's in the 20's is not my
idea of fun. Frostbite and frozen paint is not a pleasant painting experience. What I rather do is collect interesting subject matter throughout the year with my digital camera, download to my iPad and lock myself in my studio with a hot cup of coffee, some John Gary playing and my paints.

How do you get around
not being overwhelmed by surroundings?
Try using a 'Viewfinder.' Cut two 'L' shape pieces of mat board and clip together. This isolates your subject matter and will help with your photo reference composition. Keep a pair of these in your backpack because you will eventually use them when you start plein air painting.

Dale L. Popovich is an award-winning watercolorist and teacher who is passionate about capturing the raw beauty of the American landscape with the fluid stroke of a brush. Talent and training aside, it's Dale's vision that best informs his work. Temporarily blinded at age 20 for one and a half years, Dale learned to rely on his mind's eye to sustain him. After a nine hour major brain surgery removing a cyst on his optic nerve, he had to learn how to walk, talk and write again. With vision finally restored, he discovered he could see more clearly than before, easily filtering out the visual "noise" around him to focus on a subject's essentials. His paintings began to reflect a certain purity of perception, and this "way of seeing" became the hallmark of his painting.

Spending his childhood summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Dale learned to love its colors, textures, denizens and moods. Today, his paintings celebrate these American landscapes and man's humble efforts to tame it.

Trained at The American Academy of Art in Chicago by Director and President, Irving Shapiro, AWS. Dale was deeply inspired by this great American twentieth-century watercolorist. Dale later taught for many years at The American Academy of Art. Currently, he teaches at the prestigious Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, and in his own studio. Devoted to both painting and teaching, Dale's work hangs in collections around the country.
