Dr. Smith has been appointed Guest Editor for a Special Issue of the APA journal, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology.  The 2017 special issue will focus on animal models of neuropsychiatric diseases.  


Dr. Smith has also been elected to President-Elect in 2017 (first year of three year term as President-Elect, President, and Past-President) of the APA's Division 28, Division of Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse.

A Guide for Undergraduates Interested in Clinical Neuropsychology
 
The Society for Clinical Neuropsychology's Association of Neuropsychology Students in Training (ANST) have partnered with the Association for Doctoral Education in Clinical Neuropsychology (ADECN) and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students' Committee for the Advancement of Racial and Ethnic Diversity (APAGS-CARED) to develop a free webinar on guidance for undergraduate students interested in pursuing education and training in clinical neuropsychology. Training directors, supervisors, and faculty are also welcome to attend. The speakers will present key information about things to consider when looking for graduate programs, while providing recommendations and answering frequently asked questions. We look forward to having you join us on:

CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT: The Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research (CAPER) at the University of Maryland at College Park has an opening for a half-time (20 hours/week) Clinical Research Assistant position (payroll title: Faculty Assistant) under the supervision of Dr. Julia Felton in the Department of Psychology.
 
The ideal candidate will have extensive undergraduate or post-baccalaureate research experience.  Strong orientation to detail and organizational skills are required.  The position will require interaction with participants, therapists and other research staff.  Responsibilities will include serving as project coordinator for an ongoing, nationally-funded grant examining a mindfulness-based intervention for college-aged alcohol users.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, although candidates with extensive post-baccalaureate research experience will also be considered.  Responsibilities will include 75% research and 25% administrative duties.  The position will involve participant recruitment, study coordination, and project management for ongoing research focused on the development of depression and substance use across adolescence.  The position will also involve conducting administrative duties for the Master's in Clinical Psychological Science program, including interacting with current students, developing student research projects, and coordinating with internship placements.

1881 - Henri Piéron was born. Piéron was a versatile and prolific French psychologist. He promoted a behaviorally oriented psychology through research in sensation, individual differences, applied psychology, physiological psychology, and comparative psychology. He established the Institut de Psychologie at the University of Paris (1920).
 
1892 - Lightner Witmer passed his doctoral oral examination at the University of Leipzig under Wilhelm Wundt, receiving the grade of magna cum laude. The degree was formally awarded on March 29, 1893. Witmer was a founder of the APA and an originator of modern clinical psychology.
 
1918 - In a telegram to the U.S. Army chief of staff, General John J. Pershing recommended mental testing of soldiers before overseas duty. Pershing wrote, "prevalence of mental disorders in replacement troops recently received suggests urgent importance of intensive effort in eliminating mentally unfit." The telegram was a turning point in military psychology.
 
1921 - Aaron T. Beck was born. Beck is known for his theory and research relating to the assessment and treatment of the cognitive bases of depression and suicide. His Beck Depression Inventory is an instrument commonly used to measure the strength of depressive beliefs. APA Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology, 1989.
