Good News to Share

The American Psychological Association (APA) has funded the Davidson College Psychology Department to hire 4 undergraduates for 8 weeks of full-time research this coming summer.  Dr. Good took the lead on writing the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Grant with collaborators Drs. Multhaup, Munger, and Sockol.  More details about those four summer research positions will be shared soon.  For now, we celebrate another acknowledgement of our department by APA.  Prior acknowledgements include a Culture of Service Award that endowed the Palmer Award given at the Senior Banquet, for example.  Extra kudos to Dr. Good on her leadership role on the current APA grant.
Dr. Multhaup has been asked to serve on the Program Committee for the Psychonomic Society.  The society describes itself as, "the home for scientists who study how the mind works. . . .The Society and its members perform and promote the basic science of behavior in areas such as memory, learning, problem solving, action planning, language, and perception that connect with other fields of research."
Dr. Multhaup has been selected as an ASIANetwork Faculty Enhancement Program (ANFEP) Global Cities, Local Memories seminar participant which will take her to Japan June 9-26, 2016.

Post-Davidson Opportunities
Hey Psych Majors!  Are you looking to expand your clinical experience with children before pursuing a graduate degree?  Since graduating from Davidson in May I've had the opportunity to intern with Eliada Homes, a non-profit psychiatric treatment facility for children and adolescents in Asheville, NC.  The RISE internship is a 13-month long program (beginning in June) in which college graduates gain a wide range of clinical experience through working in the facility's 5 different treatment programs for children dealing with trauma and psychiatric illness.  Each program is designed to treat a different age group, clinical profile, and demographic, so interns gain a wide range of clinical experiences while also learning about the ins and outs of the public mental health system.  Residential workers care for the kids throughout their day-to-day lives activities at the facility, support them through mental health crises that arise, build therapeutic relationships and create the therapeutic environment. These one-on-one experiences have been immensely valuable in teaching me about different childhood psychiatric conditions, attachment patterns, and the impact of trauma on a child's brain and behavior. It has also introduced me to the ways that various social service professionals work together to support these kids while challenging me to think about child mental health as a public health and social justice issue.  While a great clinical experience in general, the RISE program is particularly valuable for those interested in pursuing a career in social work, whether in a clinical capacity or in a macro/policy setting.  If you have any interest in the RISE program or want to chat about opportunities in residential care in general, please shoot me an email at kathryn.kemp2015@gmail.com!

PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH ASSISTANTThe Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital is seeking a full time Research Assistant to coordinate projects in psychological and psychiatric research.  This is a full time grant-funded research assistant position for projects involving the investigation of the biological mechanisms of psychiatric treatments. Responsibilities will include coordination (e.g., participant recruitment, collecting study data, database management) for a study investigating the mechanisms of cognitive bias modification (CBM), with and without adjunctive neuromodulation using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), in patients with anxiety disorders. This study will involve training in administration of CBM, rTMS, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other psychophysiological assessment. In addition, this research assistant will assist with study administration (but not be the primary study coordinator) on a study investigating neural mechanisms of cognitive-behavioral treatment response in patients with hoarding disorder.  Other responsibilities may include assistance with grant preparation and article writing, preparation of study materials, and data analysis.  The research assistant will have opportunities to co-author scientific papers and journal articles.
Qualifications include a BA/BS in psychology or related field, including coursework in research methods and/or statistics. Experience with CBM, neuromodulation, psychophysiological assessment and/or MRI are preferred, but not required.  Successful candidates will demonstrate a conscientious work style and strong interpersonal skills. This is an excellent entry-level position for a college graduate who is interested in gaining additional research experience before going on to graduate study.
The position is open to start immediately and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please e-mail resume/curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation to: Gretchen Diefenbach, Ph.D. at Gretchen.Diefenbach@hhchealth.org
