Dana Dunn edited the just-released Oxford Handbook of Undergraduate Psychology Education (all 927 pages of it!), and the frontispiece says, "In Honor of Ruth L. Ault--Dedicated Teacher, Scholar, and Friend." For those who do not know her, Dr. Ault is Professor Emerita of Psychology; she recently retired after roughly 35 years of teaching at Davidson College.
Congratulations, Dr. Ault, on this wonderful honor!

Dr. Tonidandel has two pieces of great news:
- His edited volume, Big Data at Work, has come out in print.
- He was awarded an REU Supplement from NSF that will provide summer support, conference travel, and school year support for two additional Davidson students to work on his grant with his team over the next few years.

Lindsey Lassiter '15 writes, "I am a class of 2015 graduate of Davidson and currently working with City Year Dallas, an AmeriCorps program based on serving urban city children and focused on improving their attendance, behavior, and course performance through daily tutoring and partner teacher assistance centered in the English and Math departments. I am working in an urban middle school with a 6th grade reading class, which has been both challenging and uplifting, yet also revealing to me that I have a strong passion for teaching and working with children. I am now especially interested in helping kids in similar areas build academic foundations, working hopefully as a teacher in an elementary school, so that they would be able to more successfully handle the middle and upper school experience. I have recently been accepted to pursue this opportunity with an organization entitled the Dallas Teacher Residency, which allows for participants the ability to earn their Master's degree in Education in only 14 months at the University of Texas A&M at Commerce while also receiving experience in the classroom with a mentor teacher along their side."

Diversifying Clinical Psychology Weekend at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Thursday, April 7 through Saturday, April 9, 2016 on the UNC campus

Our Diversifying Clinical Psychology Weekend is an opportunity for talented ethnic/racial minority undergraduates and recent college graduates who are invested in pursuing doctoral-level training in clinical psychology. The program includes an intensive set of seminars, panel discussions, and workshops. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to develop a competitive application; meet clinical psychology doctoral students and faculty in formal and informal settings; and receive an introduction to our Clinical Psychology program and graduate training. Travel, housing, and meals are provided for all attendees.
Eligible applicants must:
- Be enrolled at a college or university as a sophomore, junior, or senior; OR have graduated with an undergraduate degree within the past two years;
- Identify as an ethnic/racial minority traditionally underrepresented in clinical psychology; and
- Have a strong interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology.

The mission of OSSI is to diversify the pipeline for graduate education in Organizational Science. Ideal OSSI Fellows are sophomore/junior level in college, interested in studying organizations, planning to attend graduate school in an Org Science-related field, and are members of an underrepresented ethnic and/or racial student population (e.g., Latino, African-American, Native American). Grant Thomas, class of 2013, attended the OSSI as a rising senior and loved it.

1895 - Francis Cecil Sumner was born. Sumner was the first African American to earn a PhD in psychology (1920). His many translations, book reviews, and abstracts reflected broad interests, with a focus on social psychology.
1910 - Eleanor Jack Gibson was born. Gibson's work in perceptual development led to the APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 1968. Her "visual cliff" experiments are particularly well-known. She was the second female psychologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences (1971). National Medal of Science, 1992.
1924 - Frank Joseph McGuigan was born. McGuigan was director of the Institute for Stress Management at United States International University, and wrote extensively about stress and tension control and covert language behavior. McGuigan was nominated twice for the Nobel prize in physiology. American Psychological Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award (1973) and Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement (1995).
1928 - Noam Chomsky was born. Chomsky's transformational generative grammar represents a modern nativistic approach to thought and language. His views strongly countered theories of language that were based on elaborations of simple learning processes. APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, 1984.
1980 - The Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences was founded. Eight scientific societies were charter members. George Mandler was elected president and Emanuel Donchin vice president. The Federation educates policymakers, serves as an advocate for psychology, and informs member organizations about funding and policy issues.
