Get tickets for Wearn Lecture
The Wearn Lecture takes place on Monday, November 2 at 7pm in Tyler-Tallman Hall. The 2015-16 Wearn Lecturer is Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, Distinguished Professor with the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute. His talk is titled What Neurology Can Tell Us About the Human Mind. The lecture will illustrate how strange syndromes such as phantom limbs and synesthesia can give us fundamental insights into elusive questions about the mind, such as body image and creativity. Ramachandran is renowned for his work in neurology and perceptual psychology. He has been called the "Marco Polo of neuroscience" by Oxford's Richard Dawkins, and "The modern Paul Broca" by Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel. TIME Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Tickets are free, but required, and are available at the ticket office in the Union, or online at www.davidson.edu/tickets. Tickets will be available to Davidson students, faculty, and staff starting Sep. 28 and are limited to two tickets per Davidson ID.

1925 - David Premack was born. Premack is known for his work in learning and motivation. He has argued that reinforcement consists of the opportunity to engage in a behavior. The "Premack principle" states that a low-probability behavior will be performed if access to a high-probability behavior is contingent upon it. He has also taught symbolic language to chimpanzees.

1925 - James V. McConnell was born. McConnell is best remembered for excellence in teaching and studies of chemical transmission of learning in flatworms. American Psychological Foundation Distinguished Contribution to Teaching in Psychology Award, 1976.

1967 - The first report of the sign language performance of the chimpanzee named Washoe was delivered by R. Allen Gardner and Beatrice Gardner at the annual meeting of the Psychonomic Society.
