Greetings!

During the summer, the ZAPS team updated our website with a fresh coat of paint and robust information for you, your students, and their families. We invite you to visit zaps.com and let us know what you think. And, in the spirit of community, we offer you this newsletter as a quick compendium of current and pertinent information.
Why Are More Students Taking the ACT?
"The ACT has for the first time overtaken the SAT as the most popular college admissions exam by a margin of a few thousand students. So, how did this happen? Here's the explanation from Bob Schaeffer, public education director of FairTest, the National Center for Fair & Open Testing." Read the full article.

As Schaeffer points out, one reason for the increase is ACT's market strategy "as a replacement for (or supplement to) high school exit exams." Louisiana is the most recent state to require the ACT.
Hot Career Trends for the Next Decade
"Want to know which jobs are growing so fast you practically need to pull out your fire extinguisher to cool them off? Take a look at the list of top 30 jobs put together by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)." Read the full article.

ACT Readiness Map

ACT has released the Condition of College & Career Readiness 2012 report. "[F]ar too many students are graduating from high school ill-prepared for the academic rigors of college and career. The results again indicate that the US education system must do better at helping our young people to compete with their peers in other nations for meaningful jobs and careers in the 21st century global economy." Read the full article.

Show Us Your School Spirit
ZAPS presenters will travel to hundreds of high schools this fall to teach ACT, PSAT, and SAT seminars. Our first seminar of the season was at Davenport West HS in Iowa on August 25.

Angelica Vannatta, regional manager, took this snapshot of a student's creative expression of school spirit while teaching at the high school. If you would like to share a photo, email us at [email protected]
Sincerely,

Julia Wasson
President
