Ongoing Events and Entertainment
Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6p. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Taste of Alleghany
Alleghany Farmer's Market presents Taste of Alleghany on Saturday, June 18th at 6:30 pm at the Alleghany Farmer's Market pavilion on N Whitehead St, Sparta, NC. Meet local growers and producers while enjoying a mouthwatering Farm to Table dinner. Tickets are $35 each, $65 for two, or $250 for eight. Only 100 tickets available so don't delay! Tickets available at Becca's Backwoods Bean and Alleghany Chamber of Commerce.
AMH Thrift Shop Opens for Season
AMH Thrift Shop opens Wednesday, May 11 for the 2016 season. Located adjacent to the Roaring Gap Post Office on Hwy 21S, Roaring Gap, NC. Open Wed-Sat from 9-1p. Great inventory! Backwoods Beat Music Festival
Singers, songwriters and storytellers will converge on Sparta May 13 & 14, as Skyline/Skybest presents the first Backwoods Beat Music Festival in Crouse Park. Tim & Myles Thompson, a Nashville father/son duo perform Friday, May 13 @ 7p. Kate Campbell, a popular performer with Sparta audiences, performs Saturday evening @ 7p. Galax native, Dori Freeman, opens the Saturday performance at 6:30p. Performance costs: $5 for Friday, $10 for Saturday ($5 if you bring your ticket from Friday), kids 12 and under, free. Saturday songwriting workshop goes from 9a-11a & 1-3p with a break for lunch. Registration closes May 9. T-shirt and lunch included with $10 fee. Private sessions also available. VFW Chicken BBQ
It's back! Don't miss out on the best chicken around! Support your local VFW, Post 7034, on May 14 starting at 8:30 am until they sell out. Half chickens for $5 and whole chickens for $9. Join us on the 2nd Saturday of each month through September. For info: 336-200-0083

Empty Bowls Fundraiser
Come and support a hunger-free community at the annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. The $30 donation provides you a delicious meal and a bowl handmade by a local potter. Location: Sparta Methodist Church Fellowship Hall; Date: Monday, May 16, 2016 from 11a-2p. All proceeds support the Solid Rock Food Closet.
Memory Quilt Workshop
Ann Joyce will have a demonstration/workshop on Thurs, May 19th from 5-8p, to help you get started on your personal treasure. Bring a sandwich or snack and be ready to be inspired as Ann guides you in this endeavor. The workshop is free, thanks to The Alleghany Quilters Guild in partnership with The Arts Guild of Alleghany County and the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Fund. Wreath Laying Ceremony
In honor of EMS Week, the Alleghany Honor Guard is having a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Alleghany County Rescue Squad in Memory of Our Fallen Members and Board Members. Members, family and friends are invited to attend. It will be held on Friday, May 20 at 6p at the Alleghany County Rescue Squad. Light refreshments to follow the ceremony. 
Dinner at Becca's Backwoods Bean
Becca's Backwoods Bean is now serving dinner on Friday nights at 6p starting May 20 for the season. Come out for a change of pace and selections from a weekly theme at Becca's! Reservations are not necessary, but are recommended. 336-372-7888.
BBQ Dinner Fundraiser
This fundraiser is for the AHS Exceptional Children's Class to go on a trip to the Amish Country in Pennsylvania May 2017. 3rd Annual 5k Walk/Run
Benefits Lady Trojan Softball. $25 Pre-registration fee which guarantees a t-shirt. $30 registration the day of the race from 7-7:45 am with the run beginning at 8 am. Texas Hold'em Tournament

New River Poetry Competition
This competition is hosted by Alleghany High School's Creative Writing class to encourage and develop creative writing in Alleghany County among students and members of the community. New Classes Offered at WCC/Alleghany Center!
Starting June 6th you can earn a Beef Production Certificate. Start or continue taking your classes this fall to earn your Animal Science Degree! Spring Nature Hike - Make plans to meet at the US Hwy 221 Visitor Center of New River State Park on Sunday, May 15, at 9a for a nature hike discussing various aspects about nature in Spring. This hike will be about two miles long and will take place on trails that are easy to moderate for the average person. For more information, call 336-982-2587.

Hutchinson Homestead Hike - Meet a ranger for a hike to, and tour of, the historic Hutchinson Homestead. Learn about life in the mid 1800's. Meet at the Lower Trail Head Parking Area, Stone Mountain State Park at 2p.
