Ongoing Events and Entertainment
Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6p. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.

Highland Camerata Sings Songs of the Americas
We invite you to experience a wonderful selection of music from Canada, Jamaica, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Mexico, and Newfoundland. We are sure you will enjoy this sampling. There will be three performances: the first on Friday, April 29th at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence VA at 7:30 pm, the second on Sunday, May 1st at First Christian Church in Galax VA at 3:30 pm, and the final performance on Tuesday, May 3rd at First Baptist Church in Sparta NC at 7:30 pm. Admission is free, although donations are greatly appreciated.

Alleghany County Schools Pre-K and Kindergarten Screening
Pre-K Screening will be held on Tues & Wed, May 3 & 4 at Sparta School for the 2016-2017 school year. Call 372-4345 to schedule an appointment. All children who will be 4 years old by August 31st are invited to attend. 

Kindergarten Screening will be held on the following schedule:
Sparta School - Thursday, May 5th
Glade Creek School - Friday, May 6th
Piney Creek School - Monday, May 9th

Presentation on the Evacuation of Vietnam in 1975
Please join MGySgt John U Irwin Jr USMC (retired) for a presentation on a personal account of experiences during the evacuation of Vietnam in 1975. Rotary Club Drawdown
The Alleghany Rotary Club is holding their annual "Drawdown" (reverse raffle) fundraiser again this year. It's scheduled for 6PM Saturday, May 7th at Alexander Hall (formerly the Silver Dollar Music Park) and includes a dinner for two. Only 300 tickets will be sold. The top five finalists win cash with a top prize of $5000 for the very last ticket drawn. A monetary prize is also given for every 25th ticket drawn. Tickets are $100 a piece and can be shared if you want to split the cost with someone. Get yours now from any member of the Rotary club or Becca's Backwoods Bean, or Heather Klein's office. All proceeds go to help community organizations, including Alleghany Memorial Hospital for a pulmonary function machine.
Alleghany Farmers Market Opens for the Season!
Beginning May 7th, vendors will have fresh vegetables, pastured meats and cheese, gourmet baked goods, artisan crafts and more. Open on Saturdays from 9a until 12p (May thru mid-Oct) and Tuesdays from 3:30-6p (mid-June thru mid-Aug) on E. Whitehead Street (NC Hwy 18) next to Crouse Park. Backwoods Beat Music Festival
Singers, songwriters and storytellers will converge on Sparta May 13 & 14, as Skyline/Skybest presents the first Backwoods Beat Music Festival in Crouse Park. Tim & Myles Thompson, a Nashville father/son duo perform Friday, May 13 @ 7p. Kate Campbell, a popular performer with Sparta audiences, performs Saturday evening @ 7p. Galax native, Dori Freeman, opens the Saturday performance at 6:30p. Performance costs: $5 for Friday, $10 for Saturday ($5 if you bring your ticket from Friday), kids 12 and under, free. Saturday songwriting workshop goes from 9a-11a & 1-3p with a break for lunch. Registration closes May 9. T-shirt and lunch included with $10 fee. Private sessions also available.
