Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6p. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.

2nd Annual Blue Ridge Golf Tournament & Kickoff Dinner
This April 23rd tournament will be held at the Roaring Gap Club, starting at 8am. For golfers, of course, the main attraction is a challenging Donald Ross designed course. This special event supports funding for the Blue Ridge Christian School student scholarships and vital needs. We hope you will join us for a great day of fun! The kickoff dinner is on Friday, the 22nd, @ 6p, $20 for adults, $10 for 12 and under. Entertainment by Richard Shatley & Hillbilly Wes, plus a dynamic speaker from One7 Crew. Dining with Diabetes.
Dining with Diabetes is a series of classes presented by nutrition professionals including food samplings, recipes and help with planning menus for individuals with Diabetes.Classes begin on Tuesdays starting April 26 until May 17 from 5-6:30p at the Alleghany Wellness Center; cost $12 per person (covers cost of food for all 4 classes).Registration deadline: Friday, April 22; participation cap: 15 people. Becca's Backwoods Bean wine tasting.
Our monthly wine tasting will be on Friday April 29th. We taste 4 wines, and it runs from 6pm to 8pm. We usually go with two whites and two reds, but in the winter, we generally feature more reds. Highland Camerata Sings Songs of the Americas
We invite you to experience a wonderful selection of music from Canada, Jamaica, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, the USA, Mexico, and Newfoundland. We are sure you will enjoy this sampling. There will be three performances: the first on Friday, April 29th at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence VA at 7:30 pm, the second on Sunday, May 1st at First Christian Church in Galax VA at 3:30 pm, and the final performance on Tuesday, May 3rd at First Baptist Church in Sparta NC at 7:30 pm. Admission is free, although donations are greatly appreciated.
Alleghany County Schools Pre-K and Kindergarten Screening
Pre-K Screening will be held on Tues & Wed, May 3 & 4 at Sparta School for the 2016-2017 school year. Call 372-4345 to schedule an appointment. All children who will be 4 years old by August 31st are invited to attend. 

Kindergarten Screening will be held on the following schedule:
Sparta School - Thursday, May 5th
Glade Creek School - Friday, May 6th
Piney Creek School - Monday, May 9th

Rotary Club Drawdown
The Alleghany Rotary Club is holding their annual "Drawdown" (reverse raffle) fundraiser again this year. It's scheduled for 6PM Saturday, May 7th at Alexander Hall (formerly the Silver Dollar Music Park) and includes a dinner for two. Only 300 tickets will be sold. The top five finalists win cash with a top prize of $5000 for the very last ticket drawn. A monetary prize is also given for every 25th ticket drawn. Tickets are $100 a piece and can be shared if you want to split the cost with someone. Get yours now from any member of the Rotary club or Becca's Backwoods Bean, or Heather Klein's office. All proceeds will help fund Rotary and Alleghany County organizations.
Backwoods Beat Music Festival
Singers, songwriters and storytellers will converge on Sparta May 13 & 14, as Skyline/Skybest presents the first Backwoods Beat Music Festival in Crouse Park. Tim & Myles Thompson, a Nashville father/son duo perform Friday, May 13 @ 7p. Kate Campbell, a popular performer with Sparta audiences, performs Saturday evening @ 7p. Galax native, Dori Freeman, opens the Saturday performance at 6:30p. Performance costs: $5 for Friday, $10 for Saturday ($5 if you bring your ticket from Friday), kids 12 and under, free. Saturday songwriting workshop goes from 9a-11a & 1-3p with a break for lunch. Registration closes May 9. T-shirt and lunch included with $10 fee. Private sessions also available. Weekly Rotary Program
The Club meets every Thursday at 7 a.m. in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Solarium for a buffet breakfast and program. Visitors are welcome.

Let's Take a Look at Paul Cezanne! - We will study Paul Cezanne briefly and then paint an interpretation of one of his works. All supplies (including pre-sketched canvas), aprons & pastry furnished. Saturday, April 23rd 9a-noon. Cost: $40.

Alleghany Jubilee Happenings!
